FM3 Reversal?
I currently have an FM3 and am NOT going to renew it as I see NO benefit to it. It really is a multiple entry visa, nothing more. For medical reasons
I have to leave Mexico about every six months anyway. I do live here full time, but do not own property (did that, never again). I understand all the
yada yada about keeping it 4 years and so on. The numbers dont work. It costs, ball park, about 400 bucks and lots of PITA time every time its
renewed. 4x400=1600 bucks. Then, pick a number, about 800 bucks for the permanent one. 1600+800=2400 +or- over 5 years. A prepaid FMM is 32 bucks x 2
ayear=64 bucks x 5= 320 bucks. No brainer. Rumor has it, as well, that the permanent paper MAY allow the Mexicans to tax your reported income.
SO? How do I get rid of the FM3? Ask 3 sources, get 3 answers 1) Let it expire 2) Turn it in and get fined if its expired 3) Turn it in before its
expired and be visaless until a border crossing is made...Any facts? Thanks

In La Paz, went to office with our fm3's and a letter in Spanish stating why we wanted to cancel. They gave us an fmm so that we could leave Mexico.
That was it.

Turn it in before it expires, request that it be canceled, receive a temporary visa, leave the country within 30 days.

Yes, don't let it expire. time it when you can leave so you can use the 30 days exit permit which will probably cost you 320 pesos.

From personal experience...
-don't turn in your FM-3; just let it expire; to do otherwise will cost ya'
-leave before it expires
-get your tourist cards when you need 'em to come back in
-don't worry 'bout it

Its a matter of timing...I have to leave in late May or early June for a couple of days (VA visit) and my FM3 dies 3rd week in April...What happens if
I get caught without a valid visa?

trust me, you don't want to find out. in this particular case, being that you have to "overstay" - better to get the FMM / tourist card.
or if you really want to stay another 32 years, why not get the FM2, wait the time it takes and then become a citizen. You will never have to visit
immigration again. never have to pay again.and you will be permanently legal.
it all comes down to peace of mind and being legal.
