Sierra La Gigante south of Loreto

I've been looking at possible areas to visit in Baja Sur for astronomical observing. The reason being the further south you go the more you can see objects in the southern sky like the southern cross for instance.

I attached a light pollution map of Baja, so as you can see the whole of the southern tip of Baja has light pollution (although grey class skies can be quite dark too!!). So I'm concentrating on possibly checking out the Sierra La Gigante south of Loreto.

Has anyone explored this area thoroughly? I'm looking for an area that has 1.) elevation-- the higher the better
2.) relatively unobstructed horizons
3.) reasonably decent roads-- no 4WD necessary

Plate 42 in the Baja almanac seems to have lots of little roads leading in to the sierra from the west, anyone think of some possible good spots in there for camping and setting up of scopes?

thanks

Mike

Top of the hill out of ligui on hwy 1. About 3 miles south , great view of ocean on one side and low hills on the other . Camp on the beach in ligui in the day and drive up for the stars at night .

Not to be too picky, but that would be "gulf" on one side.

David, you're dropping the ball when I've got to point these things out:lol:

There most certainly is but one side to every story: the TRUTH. Variations of it are nothing but lies.

Look again my friend.. that is Ligui you quoted calling it an ocean! I had no issue with it, since the gulf is merely a finger of the ocean... my my you are picky! LOL
Hope all is well for you in Washington? Did you find me a job up there??:light:
