New Baja Atlas, smaller size, due out soon
If you are considering purchasing an atlas, maybe wait a bit.
I just purchased the (very large) baja atlas for travel to San Ignacio, and while eating at Espinosa's (southbound) was told by the owner a new,
smaller version is about to be released.
Checked back while northbound, and she said it wasn't out yet (March 10) but would be any day (and offered to save one for me).
So... Anyone thinking of getting an atlas, maybe wait til the new version is released.

I HOPE it isn't the same type of thing published in 2007!
This Baja Atlas smaller size is not the Baja Almanac or even close... unless it is different than what came out in 2007....
See my review and BajaLou's comments of the 2007 Baja Atlas (photo below)... it was a poor map book compared to the big topographic atlas of the
1980's and 1990's that became the smaller Baja California Almanac... Lacking in a lot of detail, no topographic lines, no arroyos, not as useful as
the Almanac...

thanks for clarification. She may have mixed "atlas" and "almanac," which is what I bought. She saw me using it and mentioned the smaller book. (She
did mention "Las Vegas," which is where the almanac is published...?)
Not sure which Sra. Espionosa was referring to...
I also like the detailed, large topo maps. It's nice to have that level of detail.
I used to travel in Baja with a geologist who could explain many of those amazing features we admire from the road: sedimentary vs. igneous rocks,
soils, lava domes etc.
One note: the vastly improved road to San Ignacio Lagoon is not indicated on the 2009 edition almanac. The pavement begins just outside of town,
continues about 20 miles, then it's world-class washboard and narrow raised roadbed thru the saltflats for the final 10-15 miles (depending on which
camp you want to visit)

Thank you for that and let us hope for quality maps and books always!
Landon of the Baja Almanac (or the Mexican topo map cartographers) were quick to show the road paved all the way to Bahia Tortugas in 2009, when it
isn't, but only show about 2 miles paved out of San Ignacio towards the lagoon! Thanks for the report that over half of it is paved now. I had heard
it was at least 20 kms. a while back...

I hate the smaller book, which is what I have. It is very difficult to match up pages to see how a route continues. I am going to replace it with
the larger edition which is much more user friendly.

The Atlas and the Almanac are two different animals.
We have heard nothing about a new version of the Almanac. I do think that they would have told us as we are one of their biggest distributors.
