Using AAA for Mexican auto insurance.
I have seen umpteen threads over the years about auto insurance but not much about AAA. Tell me experts and others, have you obtained trip insurance
from AAA and what was your experience in terms of price and coverage?
Also, have you used AAA to get pre paid FMM?

When I asked my AAA agent a couple of months ago I was told AAA doesn't sell insurance for Mexico.

When I asked my AAA agent a couple of months ago I was told AAA doesn't sell insurance for Mexico. |
...and
WHEN they find out you are living in Mexico they cancel your membership as well.

yep, happened to me when my ex told them I had moved to Mexico. Also the fact that I had an insurance company cancel me made it hard to find a new
one.

My question is in reference to 'trip insurance' meaning 1 -6 weeks, not a resident policy.

Interesting, a few months ago I visited our local office here in Bako and they said yes they do sell Mexican/Baja auto insurance. Also got a Baja map
with a print date of 2010.
Inquired online today with AAA and received a quote including the newly increased third party liabity coverage of $300,000. Of course price depends
on length of stay and value of vehicle. Full coverage for 2011 Toyota 4Runner Limited w/ current vale of $35,000 USD for nine(9) days is $250.00 USD.
Wondering where this quote ranks with other insurers?
Anyone?

Mexican insurance thru Vagabundos or Discover Baja is much cheaper. Baja Bound is a sponsor here, also. You buy a 6mo policy I believe which is
cheaper than a weekly fee. Travel Clubs also help out with Travel Documents and info. Long time ago we used to pay something like $15 per day for
two weeks equal to a years fee ! I do like AAA when in the North Country as a 30yr. member! Good luck, Amigo. Tio

I am familiar with the good people you mentioned. I have purchased policies in the past with them and others. Long term policies can be great for
long term stays or multiple entries and less expensive. I stay away from cheap  . I used my Farmer's agent out of Yuma for coverage when I worked in Cabo years ago.
Not sure I can find good coverage for $15/day.
Keep looking for reasons to stay a member of AAA and quite frankly not seeing any advantage. Maybe you and others can enlighten me??

I used AAA 20 years ago. They reinsured with another company I think. I use Discover Baja Club now and I am very satisfied.

Hey Marc,
Thanks for your reply. Discover Baja charges $39/yr membership and gives no quotes that I can find without membership fee. Could be very
advantageous for multiple trips if the price is right. Maybe giving free quotes would bring more membership?
Also, I am looking at 2-3 one week trips per year. What are the advantages?
D.B. offers easy access to FMM's, fishing licenses, etc. Might be worth the extra cost of membership.

We have AAA for US policy, I don't have #'s at hand,
but would bet AAA is more $ with less coverage than
say bajabound, which has a Mex Ins Co called HDI
which has nothing but good reviews, Discover also
has HDI. Prepaid tourists cards have never made since
to me, the prepaid card is approx, $24 for the fmm +
the fee for the pre paid about $12 -$14, so the $24 fmm
is now $36 or so, plus you have to join the club for $39 or so,
back when the bank window was not 24/7,
the prepaid made a little since

I just ran your numbers thru Discover Baja for a quote and for 10 days it would cost $235. For a 90 day annual policy its $460.
Thats in ref. to:

We use a local guy in Ontario Ca. Tom Flores, Chartis/AIG are the carriers.
we paid $450.00 for the year. It has been the same for the past 5 years.
We have a 99 ford F250, valued at 15,000, had to use it one time!
and they took care of it. They do take their time, but all worked out.

I use AAA. I have had my reg policy with them for 24 years and purchase my Mex insurance from them. Are they a little more? YES. Every issue I have
had has been taken care of PROMPTLY and with no hassle! The mexico insurance they offer is from the same companies that everyone else brokers for, the
difference is I know my broker and they will help me if I ever have an issue.

One year Baja bound was cheaper for the year policy' the next it was Lewis and Lewis . I shop around every year . Never had a claim can't comment on
service

Yes, Discover Baja (and Bajabound) are not really cheap, but neither is any other broker that sells Mex insurance. They are brokers, not insurers.
Annual liability does cost around $90, make it 130 with membership, possibly $150 with some service fees. 6-months insurance will be a little less,
and one month a little less than 6 months. Basically, one year costs 2-3 times more than one month, i.e. one month trip is expensive. I cost me $220
from Bajabound - actual insurer was Ace Seguro - for mere 26 days, truck with liability only (old truck), and a cheap trailer under 12,000. At the
very end the "service fee" $20 pops up. So they get you either way - membership or a service fee.
After I bought the insurance, I changed the State of registration for a trailer (too long to explain), and tried to change the insurance record, and
people at that 1-800 number were totally useless. The 1-800 line offers a menu: medical help, legal, or road assistance. They were passing me from one
clerk to another, every time asking the same questions, and nobody was able to or even knew how to change the vehicle record in their files. So I
drove all the way in and out with basically invalid trailer insurance, for which I paid extra $100. All phone reps spoke English, though some
struggled a bit.
Edit - PS: have just checked the AAA, Acadist is right, they broker same Mex insurance as everybody else, and they charge slightly more than Discover
Baja or Baja Bound.
