Re: your original post...
When was the photo taken? This year?
YFT would NOT be a good sign at this point in the game!
It would indicate a poor dorado season.
No YFT till late July please!!!!

Pam,
Can you explain these statements, please?
What are the migration patterns of YFT and dorado during a 'normal' year versus a year when YFT appear early?
If the dorado don't show up in good numbers this summer does that mean it will be a good YFT year instead?
I guess this is all related to the flow of warm currents but I would like to know more about it.
Thanks

YFT question for Pam
For anyone interested in that question regarding why early YFT appearance in sea of cortez could lead to a weak dorado summer. I got this U2U from
her.

You probably didn't notice it.
Hi there-
sorry I just got this now. I'm not on the board very much, only when I have some free time which is rare, but I tend to shoot of my mouth which may
not be a good thing...
in 1998 Loreto had lots and lots of YFT due to La Nina wether patterns that followed the last strong el nino in 1997. The water was extremely cold so
we had the YFT come in nice and close and there were lots of great quality fish.
Unfortunately the commercial fishermen took everything! How could I report factory boats with spotter planes and purse seines taking absolutely
everything. After they took those fish, there was nothing to go for.
Yes we had yellowtail and bottom fishing that we'd notmally expect in January instead of July but no dorado or billfish what we normally expect. It
was simply the worst year to be in business, clients took the bad fishing out on me and they went home with empty cooler chests.
The poor gy that makes lead weights usually is off in the dead heat of summer, but he was cranking away trying his best to keep up with avery high
demand for his product. As a result it was very difficult to get lead weights to fish the bottom so fishing was poor due to inability to properly fish
for what was actually there.
Bottom fishing is miserable in the heat of our summers too.
So I hope we don't see any YFT in the near future.
Hope that explaination helps.
Pam
Thanks

I don't know... On the another hand a good YFT year wouldn't be bad either.

YFT-
well 1998 wouldn't have been such a bad year if we had a better chance at getting those YFT that were here. But the commercials were to blame for
taking everything. Despite reports by pangueros to authorities those commercial boats kept fishing and taking and nothing happend. In early July of
1998 the YFT were gone. We had another significant school of 60 pound class YFT later that summer in the month of August. The commercials took those
too!

Yellow Fin y Dorado
Pam,
I remember that 1998 season, and comercial boats that wiped out those 6-7 schools of tuna
But go back to the early 80s, and Loreto always had a healthy mix of Dorado and Tuna durning the summer months. I remember try to decide to go south
for tuna, or out for Dorado. The old Mission Hotel used to have a Dorado/ Yellow Fin tournament in July each year.
Let's just hope for the fish..without the comercial boats

1983
I caught my first yellowfin that year... and second ... and third ... and fourth... and lots more.
It was my first time on a Tony Reyes trip (July). The tuna were thick in the BOLA channel and we caught them all around the Midriff islands.
Later on, in October, I drove in to San Francisquito through Arco and the tuna were still there and I fished for them from a tin boat.

If I,m not to mistaken you wrote a trip report about that trip on the old Amigos board, that was one of the funnyest things I have read on these boards.
Your description of the trip out of there on the hill was hilarious.

Yes, that's the one to San Francisquito.
It sort of reminded me of your experience conquering "The Three Sisters" a bit, on the way to Gonzaga.
I guess if you've experienced it then these stories click in a personal way, otherwise - it's just amusing.

You gotta try, baitcast. I, too, wouldn't buy that color a few years ago when Gene recommended it. But, the guys at the Jigstop have a boxes of extra
pink ones laying around because it outsells all the other colors put together, verdad.
Besides, they troll down 25 feet and who knows what color they appear to the fish down there. I think you lose your red color in the top 10 feet of
the water column.
Like most guys I just experiment with something lures. If it works then it becomes a keeper.
Best colors for dorado proved to be green/yellow or mexican flag. I found the feathers worked better than plastic ones.
Wait till you see my new boat launch wheels this summer. They look like something from our space program. Speaking of that ... gotta go downstairs and
put the final touches on the work.
