Medivac Insurance???
I would like your input on what is the best Medivac insurance to have for visiting Baja? We spend most of our time in the San Felipe area, but plan on
travelling all over the peninsula soon. I see that there are many choices on-line, but would like to know your experience with the various companies.
I see that some suggested Frontier Medivac, but for some reasons it is not available to Washington State residences. Thanks, as always, for the help.
Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!

We've been using SkyMed for 15 yrs now ..Came close to using them..and have friends who almost did..They were standing by ready to evacuate her.. So
far impressed with the service.

Divers Alert Network (DAN) membership is something like $35 a year and includes $100k of worldwide evacuation insurance, available any time you're 50
miles from home. It has a good reputation, and the accident/illness doesn't have to be diving or water related. They'll evac you to "the closest
adequate medical facility" (not their exact wording), which obviously isn't as good as the hospital of your choice like some of the other companies
offer, but those options cost much, much more.

SkyMed "takes you home" back to Canada or USA not just to the nearest medical facility that can treat you. For up to 6 month coverage in Mexico it
is only $444.00 for a family with kids (up to 18 or 23 in school full time), for a full years coverage in 32 counties. IF I can be of help please

AAA in Nor Cal offers $25,000 worth of emergency coverage, land sea or air, if you have the premier membership, I think it's about $130.00/yr(my wife
pays the bill). From what I've read on this website alot of Medivac Co's won't land on dirt airstrips. I would also contact Celia Diaz at Binational
Emergency Network. She works to facilatate evacs from baja. Check out the search feature as this has been covered alot on this forum. I've heard
great things about "The Spot" and the insurance that comes with it.

As of yet, we have not found one that will land on the remote dirt air strip in a place like Bahia Asuncion ??? It is a good air strip, but it is
dirt.

When my wife had terminal cancer we felt it would be important to have a medical evacuation policy that would do two things. First, it had to accept
people with pre-existing conditions and second, it had to fly in to small strips like Palo Verde (Santa Rosalia) because that was where we lived. So
we ended up choosing Med-Jet because it met both of our important conditions. I have had a lot of people since sign up because they liked the coverage
and the ability to come into small airports besides commercial airports like Loreto, Cabo, or La Paz. Family membership runs about $385 for an
annual policy, but if you are going for shorter periods of time you can get a policy more adapted to your time frame of how long you will be in an
area.

just to clarify, santa rosalia is a paved strip, right? I think people were wondering about coverage extending to unpaved strips like bahia
ascuncion.

Thanks everyone,
I did some research on the SPOT Satellite Messenger and since we will be moving to Baja within a year+ and doing more back country exploring, I
decided to purchase a unit and get the GEOS Medivac insurance.

Try contacting Global Rescue. No personal experience, but they do promise to provide "field rescue" from the place of injury to the hospital of your choice. With
helicopters if necessary. Not cheap.
Geos/Spot evacuation... It is not clear what is their policy with short and/or dirt airstrips, and I don't like that they force you to chose within
their list of communication devices. I don't like email-based communication, this protocol is not reliable and sending SOS email with no details
might not be the best method. Satellite phone they allow only a specific brand and model, which incidentally is one of more expensive.
