They lay them all year round but most of them are laid from August thru October and take about 100 days to hatch. The females inspect the nest sites
for a couple months, they lay eggs in different nest two or three times a season up to 100 or so eggs each time. The babies swim away and come back to
do the same about 15 years later. I think the count this last year was 45,000 for East Cape eggs -- don't have the numbers for Cabo San Lucas.

Pedro the tortuguero patrols the beach on the near east cape for several miles on his ATV every morning during laying season. When he finds a nest he
digs up the eggs and takes them to the hatchery on a protected area of beach. All egg cashes are tagged as to place and time. When the little guys
hatch he takes them back to the appropriate spot and releases them by the 100's.
This has been going on for several years leading to thousands more turtles making it to the water.
The main problem with leaving the eggs where laid is that dogs uncover and eat them. Also, beaches with heavy public usage are not conducive to safe
hatching. Areas with heavy vehicle traffic are also a problem.
No b-tchin\' in the Baja.

Are those tire vehicle/tire tracks running across the turtle trail and next to the nest site?
