Rip off?
What is the going price for pitayas?
A friend just had to pay $20 USD for 6 of them and I'm sure he got ripped off.

You mean from that guy selling them on the side of the road by the school. Who did that?

About $100P for a large coffee can full.
That being said, they're early in the season, usually in summer as I recall in southern Baja, so who knows the reasoning.
Bottom line, your friend really wanted some pitayas, so he ponied up. Could have done worse things in life.

Thank you Dennis. I was going to do that when I got home and forgot all
about them till I saw Bobs post. They look delicious and tasty but a little spendy for my tastes.(pun intended)

What the heck is a pitayas? Lol. Saw the picture and said its "dragon fruit". When I travel to Asia they are all over the place. Although I just saw
them is the Solana Beach Von's last week. LOL.

For those who have not followed her posts...
Shari normally takes a group of visitors and/or locals for the search for pitahayas.
If you do a search, on the word, you'll find her posts.
Her timeline is usually end of June-Mid July. Take a knife, machete, gunny sack and leather gloves (not unlike the search for snipes in the U.S.)

Some of those photos in the links above are of a different fruit, sold under the name 'dragonfruit' and is not the same pitaya as found in Baja.
Here are some photos taken from vendors along Hwy. 1 in San Quintin, back in November, 2004... with Antonio, BajaCactus:
The Pitaya dulce (Organ Pipe Cactus) produces a fantastic juicy treat.
Roadside vendors were selling them in San Quintin.
Se vende Pitaya Vuena (Buena) Spanish for Good.
On the right is the fruit with spines, on the left they were trimmed and ready to eat.
The fruit was brought up from La Paz.
Antonio shows me how to peel the fruit... it's easy!
Very juicy, 100% edible, tiny strawberry-like seeds, like biting into a cherry popcycle!

Between Ligui and Cd. Insurgentes, Hwy 1 passes many pitaya agria and pitaya dulce plants (also spelled pitahaya):
Pitahaya agria (Sour Pitaya)
Pitahaya dulce (Sweet Pitaya/ Organ Pipe Cactus)
