Outboard Boat Permit?

I am leaving my Kayaks behind and transporting a 12 foot "Porta Bote" on roof. It's powered by an outboard and registered in California.
Do I need to register this thing or obtain a permit for use in Baja??

As far as I know, boat permits are no longer required in Mexico.

No, it is under the required length for a permit. I take it that you are referring to the boat importation permit, not the no longer required boat permit. Either way, you are good to go!

The TIP (Temporary Import Permit) is required only if the boat you're taking down is larger than (I believe) 16' so no worries about any watercraft smaller than that.

This would mean - most kayaks and canoes would require TIP, unless you import it and pay tax. Though I haven't heard of many kayakers/canoeists paying tax. With today's gas prices, a lot of people switched to square stern canoe that carry a small outboard, up to 10-15 HP, and those are usually over 15ft. Probably Mex customs haven't caught up with the trend yet.

So...discoverbaja and bajabound both confirm that NO tip required for vehicles in Baja or the :Sonora: zone...does this apply to boats over 18ft as well...OR do boats still need a tip in Baja

headed south again in April...never been asked for one in the past

Lot's of info on this subject lately - everything I've read states that a TIP is required for all vessels over 4.5 meters. Good news is the TIP only costs $50 and is good for 10 years.
