Best or easiest way to San Filipe
I am going to cross the border at Tecate and was wondering if I should go on down to Ensenada and over to SF or go east out of Tecate towards Mexicali
and then down to SF? Any opinions?
Off grid, 12-190 watt evergreen solar panels on solar trackers, 2-3648 stacked Outback inverters, 610ah LiFePo4 48v battery bank, FM 60 and MX60
Outback charge controllers, X-240 Outback transformer for 240v from inverters, 6500 watt Kubota diesel generator.

East out of Tecate toward Mexicali. Take the 2D toll road because it just lets you out onto Hwy. 5 without going through Mexicali. Hwy. 3 is pretty
but trying to pick it up in Ensenada is awful (horrible signage) and it's twisty and windy.
Of course, if you're looking for the scenic route...

I like going through Ensenada but I guess it's what you like to do.
PS: If you can read road signs it's not difficult

I would go east out Tecate too, it's faster this way. The route thru Ensenada is pretty simple and I don't follow road signs I've just been using the
same route for about 25 years. Below is a google earth map. If you go into Ensenada along the water you will pass the Convention Center, on the left
after the bridge, where SCORE usually has the driver/riders meeting and where contengency is held on the street. Anyway continue past the Convention
Center. A couple of lights later there is a 7-11 store and Pemex on the left corner. Continue straight to the next light and turn left. It's a 4 lane
street. Stay on this street going under hwy 1 and past the 4 way stop sign. There might be two 4 way stop signs as you pass the concrete plant on the
right. The street curves to the left and after several stop signs you are out of town and on your way to Ojos Negros.

Going east on 8 from San Diego, I've always gone to
Calexico, down to SF, some have an issue with going
thru downtown Mexicali, never did study the pros/cons
of Tecate crossing, the mileage seems to be a toss up.
I suppose it is out of habit, I believe the Tecate Hwy
has a toll and a bit of a grade

Take the toll road out of Tecate and then you skirt the outside of Mexicali, avoiding lots of traffic. Then turn South when you get to the Hwy.

Best/ Easiest... from where?
If you are already going to be starting in Tecate, Mexico, then yes as stated before... take 2-D toll highway east, making sure to fork to the right
(signed for San Felipe) before reaching Mexicali to avoid that city. Tolls will come to about $10 between the three booths (El Hongo, La Rumorosa,
Mexicali South).
If starting in San Diego or north, then take I-8 direct to El Centro and south on 111 to Mexicali (no tolls, fastest time). You do have to drive
through Mexicali, but nearly no turns and well signed for San Felipe.
Here's the Mexicali area map showing the toll highway Mex. 2-D, 18 miles long (Libramiente de Mexicali), that avoids town when going between Tecate
and San Felipe or straight through for San Luis, Rio Colorado, Sonora.

After you pass through the toll booth at Ensenada (San Miguel), drive south until you come to the (welcome to) Ensenada area on your left. Just past
that there will be road signs for Tourist Route and Business Route. The Hotal Coral is on your right and a new Soriana is on your left.
Take the business route that veers off to the left, follow the traffic and when you get to the Calimax on your right drop to your right one street and
you will be on 9th street. You will pass the Police Station, the Fire Station and the Ensenada baseball stadium all on your left.
When you get to Reforma (stoplight) there will be a sign for San Felipe....turn right on Reforma. There will be another San Felipe sign (Hwy 3) in
about 2 blocks at Calz de las Aguilas....turn left and you are on your way.
The below directions have you driving through town in the tourist zone and backtracking all the way back to Calz de las Aguilas.

If you are crossing at Tecate because you want to avoid Mexicali, then I agree that you should take the toll road East. It is an easy drive on a good
road. It drops you on to the 5 just South of Mexicali.
However, I usually cross at the old crossing in Calexico when coming from San Diego area. The way through town does have traffic, but nothing awful
and the way through is pretty cut and dried...just follow the signs.
I do like the highway from Ensenada and it brings you out at the Military check point just north of San Felipe, but this seems like you'd really be
going out of your way to do this as the road is narrow, windy and just slower...also parts of it were rained out during the summer...this can be an
issue if there is rain.
Just my 2 Pesos!
Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!

HWY 8 east to HWY 7 south through the Mexicali east crossing. That's how I like to go.

Yes. Avoids the traffic and the smog. GREAT way to go home.....

The Ensenada route just may get you a little dazzled....but I love the route to SF from there. Many little side tours to see :-)
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

We always use Mexicali, old crossing, follow signs, little traffic, if you go late. not bad if you go early. less than 2 hrs from crossing you can be
at
the Bar Mirmar, enjoying A cold Beer.

The main reason I was going to cross at Tecate is I have equipment that I am taking to my place in BoLA. A new TIG welder and a new plasma cutter, are
the big items, plus some other stuff. Tecate has been easier lately than San Ysidro for getting stuff down without a hassel. If I get the green light
in Tecate I just keep going but if I get checked then I will pay the duty and grin and bear it. What is the crossing like in Calexico, are they pretty
lax like Tecate or do they check all trucks like San Ysidro? From there I am going to take the road through San Filipe and on down to Laguna Chapala
and on to BoLA. I haven't done that route in probably 30 years but been hearing so much about it lately that I thought I would check it out. I'm not
in a rush.
