Surf trip SW of El Rosario and N of Erendira
Spent some time over Labor Day week searching for waves. We left Saturday 8/31 early and shot straight down to El Rosario, then left the pavement to
explore the points, reefs, and coves to the west and south. There was a mix of NW swell generated from winds outside the Channel Islands, and a bit
of SW coming up from the southern hemi, with the potential of something from the tropics mixing in.
We arrived at our first stop late in the afternoon and found some well shaped surf, small but in the fun-sized zone. We set up camp right in front of
a decent reef.
The next morning was foggy but there were some perfectly shaped little peelers for us:
We hung out here all day and another night, then decided to press on south. It had evidently rained quite a bit prior to our arrival and the already
bad roads were in poor shape with lots of crumbling ruts:
This poor guy didn't make it and became vulture bait:
We eventually came to Punta San Antonio. There has been massive work here with a new, large steel building, a jetty complete with a crane and boom, a
quarry, plus a small army garrison. North of the point is still OK but the point itself is pretty ugly. I wouldn't recommend going there.
South of Punta San Antonio we were forced to turn around due to a washed out arroyo that was impassable. There were no tire tracks from the locals
and we weren't about to be the first. We turned back north and explored the many miles of reefs, coves, and small points; there are many 'secret
spots' waiting to be discovered.
The next day the surf picked up quite a bit and we scored some really fun waves:
There were tons of large barred surfperch feeding on sand crabs; we caught a few and made fresh fish tacos for dinner. I made a batter out of flour
and water, then rolled the battered fish in panko crumbs and fried. Surfperch tacos are amazing.
The next morning we make a move up to the area just north of Erendira, and camped on the beach above Punta Cabra. It was a ghost town there.

I think I saw you guys heading south around the Pemex at Santo Tomas. That rig looks familiar. It would've been around 11AM-12PM.

Good times. Thanks for sharing.
No waves for us a week before you and a little further south. But we did drive through some of the rain that messed up the roads. El Rosario was a
mud pit on August 25.

Probably was us, we stopped for gas at the Santo Tomas Pemex right about that time!

very nice. I've always wanted to check out Pt. Cabra on the way South. How is the road / drive time out to Santo Tomas?

The fastest and easiest way to get there is to take the Erendira route off Mex 1, which is paved all the way to the coast, then drive about 15 min
north on an easy dirt road. The Erendira turnoff is after Santo Tomas and maybe 7-10 miles before San Vicente as you head south.
You can also come in from the north on the same road that takes you to Punta San Jose, taking a left at the fork about 5 miles inland before you reach
PSJ. Although it looks shorter on the map, this way is much more difficult, about 25 miles on dirt rather than 2-3. This road leave Mex 1 about 100
yards past the Santo Tomas Pemex.
