magic jack plus
Before moving to Baja, is it advisable to buy magic jack plus and set up the account in the US?

That would give you a U.S. phone number, no matter where the phone was connected to the Internet.

Yes. The location in the US that will make the most calls to you (and vice versa)
is the area code you probably want.
I bought a Magic Jack a few years ago and it sure is handy in our Loreto home.

You can "transport" your home number to the MagicJack so no matter where you are you get your home phone calls. You can call to the US from Mexico
without any charges and you can set up your MJ to send a voicemail to your e-mail address if you miss a call.
Have had one for several years and it really works good

US number
David,
Thanks for the reply. I guess that my follow up question should be, what are the advantages and disadvantages to having a US number in Baja?

I love my magic jack! and even cooler that the computer doesnt need to be on to use the phone! It is so nice for our visitors to be able to call home
for free and report in to the family...it's way better than skype. You can take it on holidays and plug it into the hotel phones and use them too.

impossible
I just tried to order a magic jack plus and have been billed twice without being able to complete the order. This company is a nightmare. I will have
to dispute the charges as fraud to get them removed. There is no way to contact them by their own design.

Are you near Radio Shack? They, as well as Walmart [I think] carry it, as does Amazon.
Don't, as you now know, try to deal with the company. It's a brick wall in Bangladesh.....yesterday, anyway.

some kind of crooks
I don't pretend to know what these people are up to but I can't imagine buying their product from any source after what I've just seen. It will only
be my standing with BofA that will get these charges removed.
If you by the device from Radio Shack, how do you establish the phone number you want to use? Or do you just ignore the incoming call format and use
it to make calls? Something about all of this stinks real bad. Check their BBB ratings. I wish I had. I don't have time to become embroiled in deals
like this with the move I am planning to make.

You plug it into your USB port and it prompts you through registration. Watch the process on youtube.
Did you perhaps buy a unit from a friend or private seller that said it was new?

It was easy as pie... one price they provide a phone number for you... a slightly higher price, you pick the number (as in your old land line for
instance)... I would give more details, but my esposa did it all (but she is a lot smarter than me, too)!

Is it possible to use Magic Jack with an active Verizon number? In other words, would an incoming call go to both devices? If so, this would allow
me to be in BOLA and get calls to my cell.
Will this work?
Or, just forward my cell to the MJ number?

I would like nothing more than to cut my umbilicus to Verizon. Do you have to have a landline # to buy into this thing, or is it a # entity to
itself? Also, is it Microwave Tower dependent, like Banda Ancha, Telcel phones and the internet? Or does it pick up in remote locations? Lastly,
cost per mo/yr?
My Verizon for basic service and one PC stick is almost $130/month!! I put it on vacation hold while Baja-ing and use Banda Ancha for internet, but
would love to be Verizon-free by next summer.
I don't have a BUCKET LIST, but I do have a F***- IT LIST a mile long!

That video is pretty dated, if you have a decent internet
connection, the reception is clear as a bell. I have used mine all over the US, Mexico, and Central America, with no problems.

it's still around $20 a year. One note: for some reason we are unable to call cell numbers in Alaska with it.

That's because the Alaska area phone companies - GCI, ATU, ATT Alascom, etc. do not have exchanges with magicJack.
I can call my son through magicJack but only by paying for the call.
