No new road yet... same thing as the past several years. The new highway ends just north of Papa Fernandez' driveway (or 3 miles north of the Pemex). 38 graded/ washboard miles from the pavement to Chapala.

did it 3 weeks ago after the hard rains. The rain made it a bit rougher (washboard areas). bring a device for airing up your tires, let them down to 15 lbs for the dirt section. makes the trip so much nicer. (truck tires)

I went through there the end of August after the rains and the road was washed out in one spot, about 5 miles south of the end of the pavement, managed to get through that without too much trouble. I suspect the road is fixed by now.

No new road ... anywhere between Gonzaga and Chapala... sorry! Behind Coco's is the old 1955 road blasted through by Arturo Grosso. It was replaced by a graded road made about 1983 between Chapala and Puerto Calamajue. The graded road from Puertecitos to Coco's Corner was built in 1986... replacing the 1950's road.

2 years ago coco said the new coming hwy would bypass his place by about a mile to the northwest. Last year he said this has changed and the new hwy will follow the existing dirt road right by his place.

Dunno if you're planning on it, but i don't recommend hauling ANYTHING in the way of trailers or tow-vehhicle behind you, OR taking a C-class vehicle over the southern 1/2 of that road, for any reason. Even with deflated tires the repair bills and down-time is worth doing the Ensenada loop. It's 35 miles of frame-jarring screw-loosening axle-shackle-breaking lumps and bumps, and i don't care how slow you go. Single vehicle w/low tire pressure, yes. Pull even a tent trailer, you're on your own, and the nearest mechanic to Chapala (other than the llantera there) is BOLA Jct., and they are proud of their welder.
Happy trails.

I don't have a BUCKET LIST, but I do have a F***- IT LIST a mile long!

Yup... and in November of 2006, Coco told us the pavement would be there "next year"!

It's a race!

Who is going to finish first?

That road?

Or the new gasolinera in Bahia Asuncion?
