PEDESTRIAN CROSSING FROM US SIDE TO TIJUANA, SAN YSIDRO
Since OUR FEDS, and the MEXICAN FEDS have rearranged the vehicle crossing from the US side to the Tijuana side of Mexico, there were also changes made
to how one crosses from US into Tijuana:
Used to be one parked the car near the one way turnstyle and simply walked across into Tijuana, and that area put you about three blocks from Avenida
Revolución.
The new crossing has changed all that.
Now one parks the cars at the last US exit on the right. Cos is $10.00 all day, or days.
You can walk over the freeway bridge to where the San Diego Trolley stops. And just after the McDonalds, you make a left and come to a new set of
turnsyles. In a roundabout way, you are then directed to where the old pedestrian bridge was (and still is), and you end up, as before, on pharmacy
court, where there are about 20 or so pharmacies to supply your every need. You can still walk the three block to Avenida Revolución, but you can also
take a taxi which will cost $5.00 U.S. or the small shuttle for 10 Pesos, but you have to wait until it fills up before they proceed.
The IS a small INM office at the beginning of the bridgeway to fill out, pay, and stamp your IMN tourist visas...keep in mind...it IS very
small...about 7'X7' with a an equally small bank to pay for your visa, about $23.00 US per person.
Avenida Revolución is a sad place now. Only about 1/3 of shops are row open. There is hardly any traffic on that boulevard any more.
Going back, you reverse the way you came in. If you have the READY LANE passport card, you bypass the long cue-line and walk up to the READY-LANE line
(very short), just stay to the right of the long line.
But leave it to the locals to come up with a faster system to make it across:
Assuming you took a taxi to the border exit, you can board a 16 passenger van, which is called a "BUS" and they drive you to the bus crossing, which
is even shorter than the READY LANE. They charge $5.00 U.S. per person...worth the small investment.
Total time from downtown taxi to the bus and to the bus customs line was 1/2 hour on a Sunday at 3:30 p.m (traditionally one of the busiest time).
To get back to your parked car, (keep in mind, that you probably are bringing back some souvenirs, and they'll add to your body load) you can either
walk the 1200 feet from where you just crossed into the US, to your parked car, or take a PEDICAB, one of the bicycles with a back seat. They charge
$3.50 US, of 50 pesos per person.
In our instance, we took the "transportation" route both ways.
Total cost?
PEDICAB for two X2 = $14.00 or $200 pesos
Cab to and from downtown, $5.00 X2 =$10.00
Van to the "bus" lane $10.00
Time savings...PRICELESS!

If you're heading into Mexico and park at the UETA duty free lot ($10/day) but go inside and buy something then their van will drive you to the new
foot bridge with no charge.

That's good to know. I always park at Border Station and now I take the pedicab across, though I pay a little extra in tip as the "ex-rugger" fee—poor
guy.
Udo, do you have a bigger resolution on that taxi economico list?

There is parking on the east side of I-5 behind the Jack in Box or just north of it. No need to cross over the 5 now to go in and out of Mexico. In
the past, you had to on one of them...
Once in Mexico, continue south (past the pedestrian bridge to the older taxi area), and there are taxis and collectivos there. They have the
pre-arranged costs ones, and the regular ole pay as you go...

Great name, BTW...
I have not done much border crossing via pedestrian way, so my direct answer is no, I don't know of a better way.
BUT:
If all you want to do is to go to Puerto Nuevo for a lobster dinner, and don't want to hassle the 3 hour border wait in TJ or the 45 minute wait in
Tecate, my recommendation is to take the taxi cab route. Although the prices are posted... you can ALWAYS negotiate a better deal!
Plus the fare from Puerto Nuevo will always be less than the trip down.
MY PERSONAL suggestion is to drive to Puerto Nuevo and cross at Tecate.

Depends where you want to go afterwards. If you're headed downtown, the McDonalds or any of the little places along Larroque in Colonia Federal would
work. If you're headed not-downtown, the Pueblo Amigo hotel and casino is the same walking distance the other way.

Walked across 2 Sat's. ago, there is at least 1 $7
lot on US side, reg ped line back 2.10 hr., the ready
ped line looked good, you can get in it quite a ways
before you get to US Custome bldg, if I were going
to Rosarito I would look up a collectivo Taxi, last
time I rode 1, it was a station wagon, 1 would
have to walk to the Revo Ave., to get 1, I believe

10 peso económico to Ave Constitución, then get the colectivo for Rosarito.
