kayaks
What are the requirements for using a Kayak in Baja? Does a person need a permit? I went by the Port Office next to immigration in Ensenada and ask
what permits do I need to kayak to islands or just generally kayak. I was told no requirements were needed and then told I would need to have my
kayak inspected. I am kayaking and have had no problems.
I will probably regret ever bring the issue up.

I understand that now some of the Islands need permits to land on them. They are wildlife sanctuaries., I believe. Have no idea if it is enforced,
tho.

There is no permit requirement for the kayak. We have a handful of them for use in the Cortez.
However: if you fish off a kayak......you'll need a fishing license.
Barry A. is correct. if you are going off to a island or sanctuary......see if there are any restrictions. Locals or the harbor master will tell you.
I carry the sales receipt for the kayaks in the glove compartment ....in case there is a demand for proof of ownership..
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

One would think that this is unnecessary, but I had an aduna at Otay wanting either registration or a sales receipt to prove that the kayak was mine.
I used jedi-mind trick logic to get out of that debacle.

That's funny, some 6 yrs. back, a boat permit was
technically required for a yak, no mas, but in the land
of illdefined regs, some local authority COULD ask for
a permit, not knowing the regs, or looking for $, such as
shore fisherman being asked for a license

With all the roof top 'yaks we seeing driving Baja both ways kayaking has to be THE growth Baja sport. We have carried both of ours
to Baja for years and have never been questioned about them..well once by an immigration lady who was interested in Bonnies Hobie Mirage, other than
that nothing. We do have fishing licenses. Actually, I think both Mexican and American authorities look at kayakers as a non problem. Not many outlaw
kayak gangs messing up towns.

Thanks to everybody for their input. Actually the Port Office gave me a form to fill out prior to an inspection but I think I shall ignore it. I have
also talked to others that think a license for a Kayak is not necessary. I believe Barry came up with the thought that a permit is perhaps necessary
for spending time on environmentally protected islands.

Personally and from experience, unless you're a big-time Fish Killing Gringo with a big-time Fish Killing boat and tackle, don't worry, be happy. You
don't need no stinking badges or whatever. However, IF you venture into protected waters like Cabo Pulmo Reef area, or Mag Bay or other protected
habitat areas that are posted, then maybe consider rules and regs. Research your destinations. One great thing about Baja is (or at least USED TO
BE) you can talk to fellow campers wherever you end up and get the 'scoop' of the place, and IF you need paperwork, it can be done relatively simply.
Just remember, we're on Mexican Standard Time, and if you have a 10-day itinerary, you're in too much of a hurry. The wind can blow for at least that
long.
