Selling a US registered boat in Baja
I have a 13 ft Aluminum Gregor boat with a 10 HP 4 stroke Honda outboard. It is registered in California.
How hard is it to sell that rig to a Mexican citizen? What kind of hoops do I have to jump through to do it right?
I've had several Mexicans ask me if I want to sell it to them, but I wasn't ready until now. They say it is just a matter of giving them possession
and signing over the pink to the trailer and the title to the boat. But, of course, they always say that.

I would think your best place to get an answer would be the Port Capitan out a Pichilingue where you get yout TIP. Isn't that the purpose of the TIP?
Ie; Declaration of a "temporary import" with the intent to return to the states with it.
Perhaps the other way would be to pay the required Duty on it so it is legally imported into the country. You might try contacting Club Cuceros. I
am sure lots of sailboats have been sold down here. So many sail down with a nice following sea and then sell their boat here rather than tacking up
hill all the way home.
Are you still in town? Just dropped my guests off at the airport and I'd like to get out fishing with you before you leave.

your best bet !!
I would go to the club house at/in marina de la paz and a coulble of min.s before 8 am and ask on the the radio..or wait till the net starts and
under local info ask your question...I would NOT go ask the port captain or deal with any offiaocl..you will get the best response from a local gringo
that knows the ropes...channel 22A at 8;00 am...The NET...

Thanks for the great advice. Much appreciated. I did go to Pichilingue and got one version of what to do, I need to get some more corroboration
though. I will try your other suggestions as well.
Nope, not in La Paz right now; my loss. I went out last week just before leaving and killed em on Dorado. Caught some decent sized ones with 'you
know who' as my panguero. Made a fish stew with the backbone carcass...very delicious.
I envy your being able to have your son with you in La Paz. Must be great! My son is supposed to meet up with me in June 2014 for a week in La
Paz...can't wait. Nothing better than going fishing with your son.

Comitan, I would be happy to sell it to a gringo. Know any who might be interested? When in La Paz, I usually don't come into contact with that many
fisherman Americans given my house is in a strictly Mexican neighborhood. Heck, I get offers on my Tacoma just driving up and down my street.

Do you have a TIP for it? I think it falls under the size requirement to have one. If there's no TIP, then there's really no record that the boat is
in Mexico and I would think that you could sell it to a Mexican without any other paperwork. Probably not "totally legal", but I know it happens all
the time and there is really no trace on it. Just my "unofficial opinion".

I'd say don't over think the problem. Sell it to whoever you want, get the cash, and let the buyer worry about the paperwork.

are you being assessed property tax on this boat? if so, keep in mind you will continue to receive tax bills until the boat is re-registered
releasing your liability. I got hugely screwed on a boat that I sold that went to live in mexico.

In CA,
there are two parts to the certificate of title. When selling a vehicle or boat you must complete the back of the form. The top half is the actual
certificate of title that is given to the buyer and on the back you state the selling price and that you release all interest in the boat to the
buyer. The bottom half is sent to the state which releases you from any further liability from the date of sale should the new owner fail to register
it.
Mitchman, fishing with our sons are always a memorable experiences. On this trip he tried so hard to help me get my first wahoo without success, but
I finally was successful the very day after he left with a 60# wahoo off the north end of Cerralvo.
