Owning and Operating a helicopter in MX
Does anyone have any information and/or experiences for owning and operating a chopper in Mexico?
Any words of caution?
Thanks in advance.

Helicopter
A Customer of Mine built a Garage just for his R -22 Robinson...planned on flying back and forth..and flying around in Baja ..however right after he
got it finished, there was an incident with some drug dealers in a helicopter, so it was a no no after that, which was several years back...just my
take ....now he flys fixed wing..with no problems...

A few months ago I checked in at Mexicali and an American R44 helicopter with 4 people was checking in also. They filed for Loreto with no problems,
but of course being a helicopter they could pretty much go wherever they wanted. The Mexican government has bulldozed many of the older airstrips and
restricted fuel availability which restricts where the fixed wing aircraft can go. This is part of the "war on Drugs". Once into Mexico as long as a
helicopter can find fuel, they have the ideal way of exploring parts of Baja inaccessible to most people just like Earl Stanley Gardner did on his
famous trips. Can you imagine the great trip reports (and maps)if DK had a helicopter?
Helicopters are used by some of the race teams in Baja also.

There's already a couple of them flying around now for the 1000.

Over the last year I've noticed 2 or 3 different aircraft flying around the the San Jose area. I have never seen one parked at the airport.
I was told by someone that either leased or owned one 6 or 7 years ago that the government can commandeer them in disaster situations for relief
operations (this struck me as odd because what's the likelihood that they'd have a pilot type-rated in the neighborhood). He claimed that whenever a
storm was headed this way he'd fly it back to the States to avoid it, not the storm, but the risk the gov was going to want his.
The only thing that would concern me would be availability of getting parts quickly and a certified mechanic to do any repairs. I'd be very surprised
if there is a fully certified roto guy in Baja.
Check your u2u for a contact that might be willing to answer some questions.
