car rental question

I friend of ours wants to fly into San Diego and rent a vehicle to travel to Baja, does anyone know what car rental agency would be best to use?

Was there a limit on how far south you could go in Mexico?

I just did the same thing two days ago. After calling numerous companies (didn't call National), Budget had the best deal at $393 for 16 days and $400 for the insurance. No distance limitation. That was a deal-breaker for me with the other rental companies. See also this thread for more info ... http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=69950

Avis also permits it, though you must tell them and you must purchase insurance from them (can't stop at the border or use BajaBound). I did this about six weeks ago. http://locations.avis.com/ca/san-diego/san.html#

Doubtful. American & Canadian laws are similar. Mexican laws are not (Nepolianic(sp?) law; hence insurance liability are different).

dasubergeek is correct --- you MUST purchase full insurance on a rental from ONLY the owner of the vehicle (rental car company). No leeway here. I tried with multiple company inquiries. And you cannot cheat. Anything going to Mexico has GPS, electrical cutoff systems that will not allow the car to start if you are beyond a certain distance, etc. Too much to write about here. I suddenly feel soooo smart. I done learned alot da last few weekses.
