New to board and planning road trip.

Hello everyone!

I have been browsing this board since moving to Mexico a couple of weeks ago.

I am currently in Ensenada and will be driving to La Paz in a couple of weeks.

My current itinerary looks like this:

Day 1

Ensenada to La Bufadora

La Bufadora to El Rosario

BajaCactus Motel
El Rosario

Mama Espinoza Restaurant

Day 2

El Rosario to Guerrero Negro

Malarrimo Motel & Restaurant

Day 3 & 4

Guerrero Negro to San Ignacio
148 km
1 hour, 45 minutes

San Ignacio B & B

Tootsie's Bar and Grill

Day 5 – 8

San Ignacio to Santa Rosalia to Mulege to Loreto

Las Cabanas de Loreto

Day 8

Loreto to La Paz

Any and all suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.

I am driving a Prius, so off road is out of the question, but I am very interested in where to stop on the road and interesting things to do and see!

There are about two miles of badass road work you could avoid if you save this detour for another time. You won't be missing much.

Welcome to BajaNomad, by the way. Have a good trip.

Thanks Dennis.

Good to know.

I'm in no hurry at all, but will perhaps look for another place to stop.

Any suggestions?

There's another recent thread that has many opinions about Baja Cactus. Just my two cents is the last time I went to La Paz. I stopped at Hotel Jardines in San Quintin and then went on through to Santa Rosalia to El Morro. Made it from San Quintin to Santa Rosalia by 4pm. So getting to San Ignacio is a snap. I just never stay in Guerrero Negro unless I'm whale watching.

Missions! San Ignacio, Mulege, Loreto are on paved or Prius friendly roads. San Javier if its highway is repaired is worth the side trip.

El Moro. Two years ago, we attempted to stay there. Checked in, looked at the room, was o.k. for an old motel that we had stayed in over the years. BUT. Went to office for ice to calm my nerves drink, & said, ice machine broken. No idea when would be fixed. "try restaurant". Did. sour grapes bartender, looked in an ice chest & said "no". Not enough for bar folks"???? I was there with small plastic cup in hand, and he says NO?????? I went back to the office and gave them the key & said, changed mind. Got my money back & headed on south. Don't think the foods much good anymore either. The service there certainly isn't. Was overwhelmed with the construction at Santa Rosalia. Holy catfish. New money in town. We are so happy for the locals. Was about time, huh?????

I've read a lot of mixed reviews on Baja Cactus, but want to check it out for myself. I'm interested in the history of the place and also want to check out the restaurant. Will report back.

I wish the whales were going to be around. I'm stopping in Guerrero Negro mostly to meet the people who do the whale tours. My mother will be coming later in the season and I want a sense of where to take her.

For whale watching, you might also check out the companies in San Ignacio and Gary and Terry can set you up and even make all the arrangements for you, if you desire. I don't think you would want to drive your Prius out to the lagoon, but a few companies have vans and it is a beautiful drive out there. Besides, GN offers little to the tourist and San Ignacio is so quaint and beautiful. It is fun to just hang out in the plaza and if available, buy and eat some local made date bread, visit Casa Leree, and enjoy the lagoon.

ENJOY

Thanks bajafreak.

It looks wonderful and has been easy to book. I read on here that there are some flooding and sewage problems in Loreto right now, but it is apparently on the other side of town.

Missions are a great idea. Is there a single site that lists them? I know many are just ruins, but I'm having trouble getting information on how accessible they are.

Where is El Moro? The only one I can find is outside Mazatlan.

Thanks DianaT.

I am now thinking of staying at Casa Leree instead of the San Ignacio B & B. I think it would be fun to stay in town. Could go out to the B & B to talk to them about whale trips later in the season.

Juanita at Casa Leree can also help you in the whale watching department. She knows every one in town. And if you like some history, you will LOVE her library and collection of photos.

I plan to go to San Ignacio the next day, but didn't want to go all the way from El Rosario to San Ignacio in one hop. Didn't plan to spend anytime in Guerrero Negro except to eat and sleep.

Any other suggestions?

Plans? Who needs stinking plans, lol?

Real challenge for my compulsive self, but good for me.

Thanks for the welcome captkw!

Good source for whale tours in San Ignacio

They are located right adjacent to the plaza opposite the Mission.

I very much agree, but the office might not be open yet. And their website, Kuyima does not say if the office is open.

It is a very professional eco-friendly operation and they will take you out to the lagoon.
