ATV Insurance Requirements
I recently bought a Quad here in Baja and am in the process of registering it for off road use in SD. Liability insurance seems to be a an issue with
the Vagabundos Del Mar.
Text What are the insurance requirements for Quads in Baja and secondly what percentage of quads are actually insured?

The only insurance I'm aware of/have is to tow it. Then you need to add the trailer and quad to your policy. I'll bet there is a liability policy some
where tho.

I'll be taking a quad into Baja which hasn't been registered, even in Idaho, for 9 years. My recollection was that I'd have to get a California green
sticker, and that was adequate to operate in Baja. Like a moto cross bike. Where operating a quad on paved streets is common, I'd be curious to know
what the answer was about quad street insurance.

We take your prerunner down all the time. It has green sticker, they always
check reg. our insurance only covers on trailer. Has any one heard of driver licences insurance? they say will cover you if you have an proplem while
driving your off road vehicle!

My insurance lady, Lynda B. tells me it is good for cars that do not have Mexican plates. when asked about a car without a valid current registration
of any kind they sort of cough and say "well" ... But guess real reason for insurance is to convince a policeman that you have coverage so if they
believe you are covered you can leave. Not sure what would happen with a real claim especially an injury accident.

Oh, that's a good one, I admit I had to Google it but it really does fit. The answer to the original question is: Go talk to an insurance agent
about it. I'm sure he will tell you that you HAVE to have insurance. I am equally sure he will find a way to "lighten your load".

Couple thoughts on all this...
1. Quads, dirt bikes and any other non-street legal vehicles without plates are eligible for liability coverage but it only applies on municipal roads
(this includes graded dirt roads). You can also list non-street legal vehicles with their market value as towed/carried items on your primary vehicle
policy to have them covered for damage/theft when being transported/stored on the primary vehicle.
2. The insurance law that went into effect a few years ago in Baja Norte states that all vehicles must carry at least liability insurance. It does not
specifically state vehicle types or reference off-road vehicles, so it is fairly open to interpretation. My suggestion: If you are going to drive in
town a lot, on municipal roads and around populated areas, it is probably a good idea to have liability coverage. My dirt bike (registered with a CA
green sticker) is covered for $4,000 on my 4Runner policy for damage/theft while being towed/stored on the vehicle and I have a separate liability
policy for when it comes of the 4Runner. A basic liability policy with $50K in coverage on a dirt bike is $116 for the year....about $10 a month.
3. Regarding drivers license policies....some will cover you while driving off-road vehicles and some do not, so double check your policy. In
general...if a drivers license policy does cover you for liability on a quad or dirt bike, it will not provide medical coverage. No Mexican insurance
carriers will provide medical coverage for any kind of motorcycle, even street legal ones.
4. Based upon what I see, very few people get basic liability insurance on their quads/bikes. Most times they are being ridden off of municipal roads
anyway where there is no coverage. I don't know how strict the authorities intend to be with the new mandatory insurance law, but we have not really
heard of it being enforced thus far even for regular passenger vehicles. I like having that piece of paper in my backpack though...

Thanks Geoff, that helps a lot. I DO like having the paper in my pack, so to speak, but if it doesn't cover me except when I buzz across the village
to the mercado... I'll have to give it some thought.

Yes, thanks Geoff for the invo! I will talk to my insurance guy that covers
my truck, sure he will be happy to sell more! But I think like Vgabndo,nice to have that extra paper.
