Detouring the slide, washboards at Chapala question.

I'm trying to decide if I want to suffer the congestion of the two alternates to Ensenada or make my way to Mexicali and buy into the ~40 mi. of road "not recommended for trailers".

I feel fine pulling my trailer anywhere I will take my truck and camper. I have to go really slow anyway. Is this stretch any worse than from BA to La Bocana when it is really cut up?

I haven't been down the east side in decades, do you think I aught to go for it?

A lot worse. but that being said, more tractor/trailers are trying it. so if you go very slow. no problem.

yes. it ain't that bad. it'll take you 2 hours, no problem. just like any bad spots on any road you gotta slow down.

woody...I would not drive 20 miles an hour on that road pulling a trailer. We did it pulling our utility trailer with the race quad on it and could only go less than 10 before things started falling apart or the big rocks threatened to throw the trailer in the air.

It all depends on the trailer, IMO. If the trailer is a converted Pickup bed with the original axle and springs and shocks (like in the pic above) I don't think there will be any problem. Normal trailers will take a beating and could very well fall apart----- usually the springs fail. I have destroyed 2 trailers on that road, but the trailer I described above has made it many times.

On the other thread, someone reported that they were only delayed by 15-20 minutes with the detour. That might be a better option, or not.

From friends down that way, it was more surprise and the fact that traffic controls were not set up to favor detour traffic. I would say go down the free road... and if you don't want to, I'd do Highway 3 through Palm Valley before I went all the way to Mexicali.

Thanks Diana, I haven't been following that thread as closely. I can absorb an hour or more easily to save a 5-7 MPH ordeal.

The trailer is an old Chevy 'heavy half' with four shocks, a torsion bar, 3500 lb. axle with brakes. The tires are 16 inch 10 ply, but not new hand me downs from my old F 250.

It still sounds too brutal! Tecate here I come.

Thanks Senor Geek, Mexicali was more of an option because I'm leaving the State of Jefferson. (Oregon border)I have plenty of time to veer eastward without losing much distance.

You will be fine on the Chapala road. Just have a spare, and air down.
