mulege to washington state via san felipe
wow...i just can't believe how long i looked to finally find the "new post" thingy....my poor spongy brain......anyway, we left our place in mulege on
thursday morning, the 26th of dec. and are now in roseburg oregon at seven feathers casino...a really really uneventful trip north and i must say we
will NEVER EVER go back through san quintin and ensenada again!....we literally cut off an ENTIRE day buy going the back way!...AND!!!...no trucks or
buses AT ALL!...we turned at the laguna chapala and endured the 38 miles or so of basically "off road" road to gonzaga bay then just roared on to san
felipe for the night on day one....so fun and visually entertaining and stress free!!...we were in fresno by the end of the next day and here we are
now in southern oregon on day three...i'll be home watching my seahawks play tomorrow by 1pm in sequim washington on the olympic peninsula........if
you have never taken this route north, it is the most STRESSFREE way to go....we air our tires down to 20 lbs just a mile into the trip and air back
up in san felipe....NO PROBLEM!!!....and the paving is now south of gonzaga bay by about 2 miles...that's actually the bad news, as soon as this is
all paved all this tranquility goes away....i hope they NEVER pave this stretch.....it's really a nice, beautiful, two cold pacificos drive that won't
benefit from paving....and yeah, coco is fine!...we stopped and got two icy cold pacificos from him...he's in good spirits...

no problema, chuckie....we'll be back in feb for all of march and april...our thoughts are why hunker down in the wind when i can be thumping
steelhead up north in the same conditions???...we LOVE our community and our "santa" escapades these past coupla weeks in mulege were epic!...but,
with a new startup business and my hankerin' for steelies just sucked us up north...to say nothing for our "list" of take back stuff...geez...the car
is already FULL!....stopped at the "liquor barn" in redding and embarrased ourselves with our greediness!...is it legal to put cases of booze on top
of ones car???

Where did you cross the border?
We are flying to Spokane and bringing back a more economical rig (RAV4 or CR-V) the middle of January and are thinking maybe this is the way to
return.

This sounds like a good alternate route, avoids all of the hassles caused by the landslide north of Ensenada.
Seems like we're sorta neighbors! We're over on San Juan Island.

we crossed at calexico west, just north of mexicali....we were in line MAYBE 15 minutes...we always have to go through a huge border patrol station
maybe 15 miles north of the border but there is never any wait....roared up on the west side of the salton sea with barely any traffic at all....try
this alternate route sometimes folks; it beats the crap out of that norther section of hwy 1.

mileage difference?
It sounds shorter in time to avoid the traffic/congestion of coast.
Any idea how many more miles it adds to go up eastern route?

From where to where? Calexico is about 120 miles east of San Diego... but if you live in L.A. or north (or Arizona/ Nevada), then it could be just
little more or shorter than crossing at San Diego.

this route takes off at least 6 hours of miserable driving through san quintin, ensenada, santo tomas, etc....we cross into california just south of
indio, by the salton sea....because we live in washington, we just continue north and eventually end up hooking back up to 395, then 58 and finally 99
and I-5....piece of cake!!

no it doesn't...
the entire drive-time for me to the border
on mex1 is 12 1/2 hours in a car
it doesn't reduce the drive time
it's just "different"

When I leave in April, I am going up through San Felipe.....Havnt done that in a long time, I hate the traffic mess on North Hiway 1....I'll cross at
San Luis since I am headed to Colorado....Time doesnt matter much to me, I seldom hurry anymore......

Last year I took the route from San Diego to Julian to Borego Springs and over to an area near Brawley just north of El Centro.
From El Centro up the west side of the Salton Sea on Hwy 86 to visit in Palm Springs and then on I-10 west to I-15. Seems like a good way to avoid a
lot of traffic and some log jams in the larger Cal cities....if your destination is north of LA.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

miss more traffic
Before you get to I-15 take EXIT 117 toward 29 Palms/Yucca Valley and after about 22 miles on ca 62 E Turn left onto CA-247 and eventually you cross
over I-15 and get onto 395 and then take 58 to Bakersfield and 99 north or go further west to get to I-5 , this really avoids a large amount of
traffic and congestion. Very relaxing and only a slightly longer route.
