road to puerto santo tomas?
Hey guys,
looking to do a little weekend get away with my significant other and some friends and i was reading a little about Puerto Santo Tomas and i am pretty
stoked to go check it out. looks like its just the hotel for accommodations which is perfect. Has anyone been recently who would have any information
on the road conditions? (i drive a Subaru outback) Or any other helpful tid bits of information i should know before going? i was planning on going
toward the end of January and bringing a few rods and a couple kayaks.

The road was good in November. It was very passable in a outback. The fishing can be very good there.The water is very deep right off the coast so it
will be very cold, bring a good wet suit or dry waiters for your Kayak. There are a few fishermen that live in the area as well. You will have a great
time. We camp so, I can not give you the low down lodge/hotel there.

Two of the three Santo Tomás mission sites are passed along that road to Puerto Santo Tomáa and La Bocana...
Not much at either, just a tiny bit of what was built in the 1790's:

It is a great place to get away from it all. Email Sam at Samuel Saenz <realbaja@gmail.com>...not a hotel per se but even better in that he has
houses you can rent from small to large...bring firewood but each has has a fridge and cooking facilities. All have beds and bathrooms. I don't want
to quote his prices for sure but for 50-100 ish a night you have a house ON the water and you go to bed with the sound of waves crashing on the
rocks...heaven.
Haven't been there this last season but the (dirt) road from Highway 1 to the beach is pretty easy going... the Punta China cement company and the
farms along the way keep it in that shape but once past the turn off to the mine the road gets a bit rockier after the little town of La
Bocana...nothing 4x4 but ya gotta drive slow.
January of course you can hit some pretty nasty swells coming in from the north and there are some reefs and odd breaks...I'd be careful in kayaks
that time of year. Stunning hiking up and over the hills heading north and untouched shore fishing though the kelp is a pain in the ass...Sam can
also set you up with a panga if you want to go a bit further out for better rock cod fishing...whales should be around. They locals do a lot of
uni/urchin fishing there and if that is your thing (it certainly is mine as to eating) you can just go down to the ramp at the end of the day and buy
some from them...they may have lobsters as well.

As of last Saturday the road was in fairly decent shape, with a couple of short ugly washboard sections, a little rockfall from the rains awhile ago,
and a couple of small mudholes that should have dried up by now. The last couple of miles past the Punta China cutoff are not routinely graded, so
they're pretty bumpy and rocky but you'll be totally fine in an Outback.
As for the weather, yes the water is very cold. Wind, usually from the north during the day, can pick up quickly and make it ugly if you're outside
the lee of the point. Last week daytime air temps were in 60s to 70s depending on cloud cover. At night it got down to the 40s when it was clear and
the wind was blowing offshore, which does happen fairly often at night.
Agree totally with RHT on the uni. Try them spread on some toast with a drizzle of olive oil and a squirt of lime, or forget the toast and go al
fresco with maybe a few drops of soy or hot sauce and lime. As for the lobsters, be prepared for a little sticker shock. One of my neighbors got
quoted $10 per bug last week for "medios" (maybe a pound and a quarter), not subject to negotiation. That's a nearly 50% increase from the last
couple of years for that size. I'm hoping it's just been an off year and things will improve, but I'm a glass half full kinda guy. If you want the
bugs, Alfredo is the guy to ask for. His place is the blue one on the left just before the arch at the port.

If you stay at Sam's he usually uses Marcos for a panga captain. Marcos is old school and I do mean old school...he lives and breathes fishing and is
totally zen about the whole thing...he'll fish all day with you until your arms want to fall off (and give you all of his)...not the most exciting
fishing this time of year but certainly tasty. Not a word of English I might add and the panga wont make you think of the San Diego fleet but I
always have a blast...to see him work at it I've always thought someone should do a documentary on him...it is a tough life. If you do go out bring
WARM clothing and something waterproof for a top layer...and plenty of squid.

Thanks a ton for all the great info Guys!!!
i'm hoping the weather stays nice till the end of the month when i will be heading down there with a group of friends. i intend to have rods for
Pangas and a few for shore fishing as well. I have fished in Baja plenty so i hope i'll be well equipped. The Squid is a good call though, Thank you
for that.
Again guys, thanks a bunch for all the information i'm super stoked for another Baja mission and PST sounds like a gem!
