The box milk is what is referred to as an "ultra-pasteurized" product. I have not seen it in boxes that can be stored at room temp until you open it, in the US, but I imagine it's out there.

Where I usually see the ultra milk in the US is in the cold section and it's the "organic" milks. They have expiration dates that are generally about 45 days out. But it's expensive milk. I prefer the taste of these to the box ultra milks in Mexico that has a slightly peculiar flavor, IMO.

Have you had trouble with the cold milk going bad down here, before it's expiration date? Is that why you've switched? We have. We just dont go through milk very fast. It took some looking but we finally found a brand that stays good past the expiration date.

Curious as to what brands of cold milk you are getting over there. Probably not the same as ours, I guess. We get Santa Monica, Yaqui. Lala and Leche Fatima. Yaqui turned out to be the best one.

Cold Mexican milks sure seem "heavy". The 2% milks are like whole milk; the whole milk is just shy of half and half.

Probably not what you were looking for, but I have been curious about milk in other regions of Mexico.

Tetra-pack milk is everywhere. Cow, soy, almond, rice, coconut, oatmeal, organic, chocolate, strawberry, fortified, etc. cartons are recyclable.

1 liter boxes and small boxes of regular and low fat cow milk used to be available at Albertsons/Ralphs etc along side the condensed and powdered milk. Usually Parmalat brand. But I couldn't find it anywhere when I was up in So. Cal last week. Only thing they had were tiny juice-box size milks which was in the juice section of the store. No demand for it anymore?

We buy box milk by the case here in BCS for it's shelf-life because of our location - LaLa "light" or Ley brand low fat.

Boxed wine in US but not Baja?

Baja may have boxed milk but the US has boxed wine and I think Calimax is now carrying it

They had it at the Smart & Final near my ex's house... I haven't bought it in a while. I agree that Mexican milk seems heavier, richer, fuller... the Jersey brand seems to be the best, and it makes unbelievably amazing lattes.

I purposely looked for boxed milk when I was up the US the other day. There are one or two brands but much more expensive than the LALA. I do remember that my refrigerated milk in Mexico would go bad on me quickly even though it was well before the date of expiration. This was discussed on this board before as to what caused it, i.e. substandard refrigerated trucks and storage. So I decided let me buy a quart of refrigerated milk at Vons. Much to my surprise when I got to Baja and opened up the milk, it tasted "funny" not exactly sour, but maybe heading towards that direction. Went to Calimax and got my liter of LALA, and "ooohLALA" it was delicious!!

Got MILK ?

The Boxed stuff is great for those who like it.

I guess.

My wife's second son, who spent 9 years living in the Philippines, said that it (fresh milk) was the thing that he missed most of ALL.

And, I KNOW the feeling.

Spending a sailing vacation in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands years back, the one thing that simply wasn't available in the BVIs was Fresh Milk. The boxed stuff was everywhere and we used it, but it made an even better reason to drink more Heineken. Which we did.

Back in the USVI, one of the first things we did was stop at a 7-11 for MILK.

In Baja over the years, it is staggering how much Fresh Milk we threw away spoiled (sometimes on the day we bought it). Never did find a consistently reliable source in SF. Makes me wonder if handling prior to its arriving at the market put it on the edge.

The bottom line on milk is that the best fresh milk is straight from the teat. Everything else is just not "fresh" milk. That being said it has been proven that you get used to, and in a relatively short time prefer, what you use for awhile. I was told this years ago when, for health reasons, I switched to lo-fat. At first it tasted like water, I hated it. A few weeks later whole milk tasted really bad, oily and heavy, I hated it. Fast forward to today. We have spent a number of years traveling around the globe and refuse to give up milk in our morning coffee. The hands down freshest and most convenient solution is powdered whole milk. It is freeze spray dried literally minutes from the teat and shelf life is measured in years. In Mexico that would be Nido or our preference Liconsa. Laugh or scoff as you like but just give it a week or so, you may change your mind.

TWICE the cost or even more when you can find it.

THE dairy is located 12 km east of Vizcaino. Caracol. Drive to the guard shack tell them you want to go to EL ALMACEN (the store) and you will find the freshest milk on the peninsula. The store has cheese, gallon jug drinks, chorizo, etc. Prices are OK it's the freshness I'm after. It goes on the shelf the day after it comes out of the cow. No weird science fiction chemicals used in the cows either. No butter no cottage cheese dammit.

While we're on the subject of dairy products.....

.....do you guys get jocoque over there? It is pretty popular over here and is made by several firms. In addition to natural flavor, there are chipotle, cebolla, chiltepin, zanahoria and combinations of all these.

It is super-strained yogurt, even thicker than Greek-style yogurt.

Jocoque is available everywhere... you can get it locally made in the Valle de Guadalupe at Cremería Los Globos at the stop light in San Antonio de las Minas.

I assume you're saying leche en polvo is twice the price of whole liquid "brick" milk. WRONG. I have in my hands 1 pkg of Liconsa which I just bought for 18pesos. It makes 2 litros. Less than 10p/L. You also said "when you can find it" - wrong again. It is available in every nook and cranny of Mexico. It is a staple and available where liquid milk is not.

perhaps a Mini-Road Trip in your future, Chuckie?

Chuckles, how about the dairy out in the valley east of Mulege?
Go before 8 am and bring your own clean containers.
I've been meaning to try it.

So Many Confusing Responses

Here it goes - hubby prefers Jersey whole milk fresh in the plastic refrigerated container.

Without advance notice, I bought the tetrapak shelf stable box, and he didn't like it - he it tasted "off" to him.
