San Evaristo to Ciudad Constitucion (my favorite)

This is what I was searching for....does the OP or anyone else have more commentary or information regarding this route? I'm very interested to hear if it's rocky or sandy and for how long? Gracias.

It is a good graded road most of the time and a good dirt road where not graded. 4x4 not needed, it's more of a car road but you never know when a rock might roll onto it or if it rains ruts might develope.

North of La Paz

Mining near San Juan de la Costa

North of San Juan de la Costa toward San Evaristo

Rest stop

Has anyone been on the road past La Presa to Los Burros (Ensenada de Cortez) recently, that passes both Dolores mission sites (one next to road at La Pasion/La Capilla, and one a long hike down the Camino Real from the road)?

I don't know what it is like today but I remember hearing about how the car rental companies disabled 4X4 in the Rental jeeps. I've heard this mentioned on TripAdvisor before and I thought here on BN? WAY back in 87 the CJ-5 I rented in Cozumel had the front driveshaft removed. YMMV..

Look for the front driveshaft (between the front differential and transfer case). No driveshaft, no drive!

Yes, confirmed by Mulege Al (BN) when we were riding west of the washed -out canyon....the road is impassable in the mountains as you say, David.....but a spiderweb of rancho roads between mountains and the highway....
