i've been looking at "egg casings" and haven't found anything similar to what is in your original photo.

i think you may have it! here are 2 photos of the "raft".

have you seen lots of these kinds of shells on the beach? any big wind or stormy weather recently?

We always have big wind this time of year. Haven't seen snails but the foam that floats them looks a lot like what we have here.

I found a small purple colored snail on the beach, looks like it still has some bubble drool hanging from its chin, I'd post a picture but I can't find my camera, "maybe later".....
