El Chapo Arrested in Mazatlan
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the head of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel was captured overnight by U.S. and Mexican authorities at
a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico.
A senior U.S. law enforcement official said Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was taken alive overnight in the beach resort town. The official was not
authorized to discuss the arrest and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and is on the Drug Enforcement Administration's most-wanted list. His drug
empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. His cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war
that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last several years.

Wow! This is big! He seemed invincible. Something tells me that this is not the last of "El Chapo".
I was traveling on the mainland when he broke out of prison in 2001. Talk about long lines of vehicles at military checkpoints. They took an
especially long time searching every truck. It would take easily an hour before we could pass through the checkpoints. We always got waved through
though, once we reached the army inspection personnel.
We had just left Mazatlan and was headed south. There was no feeling of danger though. I was all over Michoacan; Morelia, Patzcuaro, Uruapan. We even
hired an indian guide to take us on horseback to the volcano in Uruapan. Then we climbed on foot to the top. There was lots of steam coming up under
your feet on the trail. The only remains of the original village that could be seen was the top 6' of the church steeple. All of Michoacan is a very
dangerous hotbed of Cartel activity now.

We will probably never know what deals were made, if any. Perhaps something was discussed at this weeks summit in DF.

It may well be that Chapo Guzman morphed into an ineffective entity much like what happened to Osama Bin Laden. When a "leader" has to isolate
themselves within an overly thick onionskin of protection, communications become difficult, enforcement is open to interpretation, minions come to the
conclusion the "leader" has little value and the reward becomes irresistible.
The DEGREE and the INTENSITY of Sinaloense violence following this arrest will be a bullet-proof polygraph test of just how valid the above viewpoint
is (or isn't). Undoubtedly there will be some. But had Guzman really ruled with an iron fist the bloodshed is going to be intense. Not so much within
the grupo sinaloense but with rival cartels striking when they think the moment is ripe. If there is an effective 2nd administering at this time, such
incursions will be brutally dealt with. Violent but brief clashes.

If they want to send a message and scare the bejeezus out of the rest of the narcos, they'd just extradite him to the US, where he will not have any
luxuries or ever hold a woman for the rest of his life. I expect to see the opposite where he'll be convicted in a big show trial then be sent off to
a luxurious cell where he'll have his own cook, flat screen TV, cell phone, and all the women, booze, and drugs he wants, until he escapes or is set
free by a corrupt judge.

When a drug cartel (or any organization that uses violence to maintain order, see "warlords") is left leaderless, "middle management" types make their
moves. Woe to those who get in their way, by design or accidentally.
Unless this was scripted in advance, and he was "retired" by his own, the promotion process can become brutal for bystanders and those working in the
pecking order.
Hoping for a quick/relatively painless resolution...
