Sunday afternoon driving

10 or so years ago when visiting my brother on the mainland, he warned that it was a good idea not to drive on Sunday afternoon because that was party time for the locals, and one was likely to encounter an impaired driver or two. Does anyone know if this is still the case? Perhaps it is just in inhabited areas - villages, towns, cities?

Did my drive north on a Sunday 4 weeks ago, and can note this aspect: Early day, up until noonish the highways are smooth sailing. Lots of folks sleeping in, sleeping it off, or in church. Great time to make miles. I think the borrachos would be later in the day if at all, but had no problems. Afternoon was busy traffic as usual, more and more newer, faster POV's passing that HAVE to be first. Sundays? Not a problem IMHO.

Oh yeah, the only drawback was Tecate crossing, 1 hr. 40 min. waiting in line (except if you were on a motorcycle, they'd butt right up to the front and the army guys just let em through :fire: )

Nope.....they are all at COSTCO or Wal-Mart.

Best time to drive around Ensenada or go shopping is on a Sunday before 10AM

That has always been my experience, I'm generally in
San Felipe during the warmer months, Mexicali locals,
due to the high temps flock to SF, they head home on
Sun., after staying all day, many drinking way in excess,
not that I haven't been there myself

This is strictly my observation, but the all-night parties here in Bahia Asuncion seem to often be Sunday night into Monday morning. Seems odd in a working town. Maybe I just got here at a time when that was happening and it is unusual.:?:

Mexicans in Mexico, being a devout Catholic country at times like this, observe the weekly ritual of San Lunes which precludes all excuses and explanations for not showing up for work on Monday.

I think he got that backwards. He should have said that one might encounter a driver or two who are not impaired. Drinking and driving on Sundays in Mexico is the national sport.

I would say Sunday driving is just fine. Most are in church or sleeping in. Sunday nights gets a little crazy after 9ish due to the fact that many parties and other social functions are at night due to the cool evenings......

Just beware of the drivers in San Diego :o

Not true. Most workers are paid on Saturday after a half days work, then a large percentage of them commence to drinking and don't stop until some time in la madrugada on Monday morning before they show up (or not) for work. It's been my experience that going to church on Sundays is mostly for women while the husbands are drinking. Never plan anything important for San Lunes and you will save yourself much grief.

Sunday morning driving through San Quintin was the happiest drive through that stretch of my memory (which ain't much these daze). Even Ensenada mid-day was somewhat do-able, but busy as usual, lighter but not by much. I'm southbound and plan on one day being a Sunday.

Wish me buena suerte.;)

"generally speaking, they are friendly and hospitable, scrupulously honest, not too addicted to hard work, better educated than the average mexican, intensely patriotic, and fond of music and fiestas. like most mexicans they are easily angered but quick to forgive, strongly individualistic and proud, completely unperturbed by physical hardship, with little or no resistance to alcohol, and with a constant and overwhelming interest in the oposite sex. The men love to fight when inebriated, but as they go unarmed no one is seriously hurt.

Not true says you :-) It's very true....well....for the last 30 years that I have been going to Mainland and the Baja.

What is NOT true is this quote of yours:
"then a large percentage of them commence to drinking and don't stop"

Wow! This is your viewpoint of the hard workers of Mexico? Wow!
