You need a very recent dog health certificate with proof of vaccines to cross either direction, but generally only entering mexico is it an issue. In many cases in mexico may ask it be within a few days. Two types exist, one is USDA signed and the other is on vet letterhead and does not require usda signature. Get one from you dogs vet on letterhead in triplicate prior to travel. In USA few infections exist for dogs but in mexico they can carry many more bugs so they like to see rabies within the last year plus a long list of vaccines, while to enter the USA your dog only need a rabbies shot in the previous three years. When entering/departing mexico this info is entered into a doggy database, when entering/departing the USA they generally do not check.

Anyone ever get asked for a rabies card on a cat? I haven't had any problems in several Northbound crossings but there's always a first time, I suppose.

Coming South at Tecate recently the Mexican woman inspector opened the side door of our class B, took one look at Felix, out 15 pound tuxedo cat, and wouldn't go in past him. Terrible attack cat, I guess.

By the way, I bought a radio collar for him and a hand held direction finder. It works great to get him back inside at dusk before the coyotes come out. Now if I can keep him from bringing in lizards. They get up under the dash and hide in the wires.

Don't you know that cats are known to attack inspectors?

We have been asked for papers for our cat when returning to the US via TJ. No problem when entering Mexico. At the military stops, the soldiers just love to pet the cat.

Just an update on this - we were down from Jan-April with our two large dogs. We had the vet letterhead forms and proof of rabies/distemper vacc, but no one checked, either heading in or out of Mexico. On our return, the US border agent petted the dogs and said, "I always wanted a malamute."

The military checkpoints and gas station attendants were typically thrilled about petting the dogs and giving them crackers.
