Anyone Know the Current Whale Count
I am heading South next week and I am hoping the whales are still here.
Does anyone have a general idea what the whale counts are for
Scammon's Lagoon (Ojo de Liebre)

Got an UNNOTICIAS newsie thingee on my cellular day before yesterday. Said the total lagoon count was astonishing. Note the past tense.
The beach near Cielito Lindo is great for landlocked whale peeping. Bring binoculars. The whales pass very close to shore.

Check the websites for the lagoon tour operators (Kuyima, Campo Cortez in San Ignacio)- they often post census reports.
Try this: Census link
Often the whales arrive/depart earlier in Ojo de Liebre (Scammons) lagoon. Because it's the northernmost lagoon along the migration route, lots of
"early deliveries" show up there. This year they arrived VERY early: December, acc to Shari and others. Calves were being born in late Dec/January
However San Ignacio, about 150 KM south, is on a slightly later schedule. I visited both lagoons in January and discussed this with lifetime
resident/guide/fisherman, Maldo Fischer. He operates Campo Cortez, and thinks there will still be many whales w/calves in San Ignacio thru March. The
older calves are more interactive with the panga groups.
It is a bit more of a trek to get there vs. Liebre. And the road from town is under construction so be prepared for delays.
Of course...whales have their own agendas and itineraries, so all of this is speculation.
And as others have noted: watch for them going northward. The moms and calves often stay close to shore, so you have a better chance to see them
heading north than south in some places.

this week there has been no census yet but last week there were 2, 107 or so...still LOTS of grays and the babies are getting super big and playful
now...look for us in Palapa #1 and ask for Shari at the lagoon gate...hope to see you there!
