Cross border SD-TJ bridge now a reality

When I flew out of TJ on Monday, I saw the bridge construction well under way at the airport.

This is great news for us frequent TJ fliers.

Yes—they finally got over the standoff. (The municipio of Tijuana insisted that the airport had to pay taxes for this new construction, and the federal government said no, we are the SCT, this is federal property, váyanse a la ch..., and they had a court case over it.)

Good and bad news. Yes it will be much easier to fly out of Tijuana. However, I was at an event where a Mexican airline person told us to expect the costs of a ticket to go up when it's completed. He said they expect the demand will increase greatly. The crossing of the border keeps many people from the US from flying out of TJ right now. We'll see.

It has been my experience that in Mexico when demand goes down the prices go up to make up for the loss. Somehow that never seems to work out though

Good point. "Be carefull what you ask for". Like most things concerning an American and Baja, when something new happens, something old is lost.

Nah. Volaris has the "Southwest effect" on prices. It may go up a little bit, but they're still competing with JWA and LAX for cross-border traffic, particularly to MEX... and I can tell you that the last few times I've needed to check, it was actually cheaper to fly from LAX or OC than from TIJ.
