Children and visas

So last time down, they would not stamp my 8 year old son's visa because his passport was expired. We had his birth certificate. We merely had the passports for I D really.

It was a Sunday and the woman had no jefe to ask about this. I asked about little babies even, and she said they need a passport too. Really?

It has always been my understanding that kids under 16 just need a birth certificate to get a visa. Has this changed?

We are heading down again in 1.5 weeks and I'll try again.

That's been the story for us....kids need a passport to get a visa. But, the immigration people never ask us why the kids don't have a visa, either. I wouldn't sweat it.

I can't speak for Mexico, but in Europe children must have their own, unexpired passports unless they are listed on the parents' passport.

Children should have passports, they're good for 5 years, both parents should sign and application is done in person, both parents attending. If you need to fly on an airline you will need them for an international trip, children too (some would say "especially for" the children, as abduction issues are paramount.

..................U.S. citizen children under age 16 arriving by land from Canada or Mexico may present an original or certified copy of his or her birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Yes it's true. As Americans you will be able to enter your own country. You ( and the kids) live there. Going to Mexico may present a different situation. Yes, Baja is a bit different, a lot different actually.
