Man Escapes Across Border Into Mexico After Being Shot At

OTAY MESA — A border officer at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry shot at a vehicle that was being pursued by police after a carjacking incident Saturday
morning, authorities said.
The driver did not appear to be hit by the officer's round and was able to flee in to Mexico, police said. The southbound lanes of the border crossing
were closed for several hours but were reopened before 2 p.m.
The incident began at 9:12 a.m. when a man forced a woman and her 7-year-old son out of their pickup in front of a store on Border Village Road in San
Ysidro. The man got into the silver Toyota Tacoma and drove off, San Diego police said.
Police followed the pickup, which had a motorcycle in the bed of the truck, at high speeds on state Route 905 toward the border crossing. U.S. Customs
and Border Protection officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver ignored orders to stop, police said.
The driver turned into the border crossing where a border officer shot a round at the vehicle, police said. The driver, who did not appear to be hit,
continued driving into Mexico.
Mexican customs officers chased the vehicle, but the driver got away. The pickup was found later in Tijuana. It was unoccupied.

since when does stealing a vehicle mean deadly force needs to be used? the guy wouldn't be driving like an idiot and potentially putting bystanders at
risk if the broke out a spike strip......

I don't think this is a legal shooting. I know it is illegal under CA laws. Does the Gestapo at the border have complete immunity to the law? Or is
the officer going to lie and say he was in fear for his life as do many other coward officers. I hope it is on tape and I hope if it is an
unjustified shooting, the officer is charged as a normal citizen would be.

I feel sorry for the gal that got jacked in the first place. Not only was she probably scared out of her wits, but i'll bet it'll be quite the cost
to get her vehicle back, paying 'storage' in TacoJuana and probably a bullet hole to repair, etc. I'm sure she's not a happy camper right now other
than knowing her stuff is retrievable. Too bad the shooter was such a bad shot; needs more range time.
I don't have a BUCKET LIST, but I do have a F***- IT LIST a mile long!

if it was me i'd tell my insurance co it was stolen. let them figure it out. hopefully, she had insurance!

Insurance is a wonderful thing on THIS side of the border, but once across all bets are off. A buddy had his motorcycle stolen, reported it so the
next morning, and within two days the perp wrecked the thing and broke his arm (the ONLY justice he received), and the Policia had the bike in
custody, serial # on file and reported stolen, and not only did my bud have to pay the three weeks storage it took to get it back, but he also had to
pay the citation on the bike for being abandoned at the scene of an accident!! Fun, huh. I'm sure this gal's rodeo is just beginning.

it isn't my problem WHERE the car ends up, it is the insurance company's problem. after it not being recovered for X amount of days they pay off.
maybe it won't make you whole, but it will be resolved.

Storage fees down here are reasonable...just a fraction of stateside fees. The problem with impound is, you don't know how much of your vehicle will
be left to bail out.

I agree, Dennis, but 'down here'? You're in Ensenada, this was Loreto. He'd offered a $500 (u.s.) reward, and by the time his 3 weeks of storage was
paid and his 'ticket' for leaving the scene of an accident (2 days after it was already reported stolen) almost came to the reward amount. Not only
that, the Loreto Policia still asked for the 'Recompensa' money, and I got to translate for him to tell them to go fly a kite.
I think as I said, her rodeo is only beginning. Her best asset is that it was stolen in the U.S., and that will give her a ton of leverage with the
insurance companies on where it ended up. They can fight it out. I've heard that almost 80% of all Bar-Certified Attorneys in the U.S. work for
insurance companies, either on one side of the table or the other. Anyone thinks the insurance business is built on benevolence needs either a
fact-adjustment or a head-tap, whichever works.
