Just as an aside, the latest current CPR protocol for first responders is, NO rescue breathing (unless of course you have pulse but no breaths). For
initial CPR it's strictly compressions only, no 5 / 1 or 15 / 2 ratios.... just keep pumping away. They figure there's enough air transference during
chest compressions, and they are the most beneficial part of the process to move blood to the brain.
Of course, it's been more than 6 months now, so maybe that protocol has changed. And, I hope nobody needs experience it, on either side of the
process. If you haven't had CPR training, it's an 8 hour course and worth every minute of it, especially for the 'choking' phase.

it is still "breaths optional". I think they are worried about the general public looking down on someone on the ground with drool coming out of their
mouth and thinking, "looks like that one's not gonna make it!" they'd rather say no breaths and get a response!
if it's me in a crowd and I ask you if you know CPR and you say yes, I got compressions.

A little drool isn't the problem; I can promise you, if the pt. does respond and revives, you'll have more than drool; expect a gusher. I've done
plenty. I also carry a non-re-breather mask in my jump kit in the back of my vehicle wherever I go (including stethoscope, etc). However, makes
sense to me as I stated about sufficient o2 flow with the compressions going on; the circulation is so minimal with manual compressions / no AED that
they figure to not interrupt the flow you do have. Saved a few, lost a few; no regrets. Anecdote: even saved an 8 year-old drowner (blue) just by
calling his name!~ Too cool.

Sorry to over-post, but want to mention one more li'l thing. Even pro's can't over-train. If you love your spouse, mom/dad/kids/be-a-do-good'er,
take a refresher course, AT LEAST every year. Never hurts, and amazing how much you forget, and what has been learned. I'm overdue for a
resusci-Annie practice class again meself. And don't give the instructor no crap about how you have a cold sore and won't do the mannequin practice.
GIT 'ER DONE, for you, your loves, maybe for your own life if you take a friend with.

There was a valiant effort by 8 orso people some medics to revive John on the beach for 40 minutes (too long). They would not give up until ambulance
arrived. I knew he was gone.
