Route 5 new construction

What is the latest info on the Route 5 completion from Puertecitos southward to Route 1 ? Last I heard was that they were 30 miles from completion.

Pavement had been completed to a point 2 miles south of Rancho Grande/ Alfonsina's Pemex station. They are working on the big bridge over Arroyo Santa Maria. I posted photos taken by 'Mando' a few months ago... if you care to search.

All of the widening work between Mexicali and San Felipe is complete and no detours at all on that 125 mile section. The road south from San Felipe was fine for the first 20 miles as of 2 days ago when I was on it.

Route 5 construction

Thanks ehall. I want to ride my motorcycle from Mexicali to Cabo via route 5 in February 2015 and I'm wondering if I can get from Puertecitos to Route 1.

Check back here a little closer to your trip date to see how much dirt road remains.
Best to figure 20-30 rough graded washboard miles will remain then.

7 or 8 miles look ready to be paved before the end of the year. The rest is a long ways out.

They are building a nice road meant to last. They are raising it up to 8 feet above surrounding areas kinda like the highway across the lake north of San felipe. One huge bridge and dozens of concrete culverts are in progress.
