highway 5 south from Mexicali

We plan to drive from Mexicali on highway 5 and meet highway 1 just south of Catavina. Any info on road conditions and places to stay would be appreciated.

Welcome to Baja Nomad... a bit has already been posted in the Road Conditions, Trip Reports, and Questions and Answers forums the past few weeks what with two hurricanes hitting Baja and all!

In a nutshell:

Pavement runs about 225 miles south of Mexicali, leaving about 30 graded dirt miles to reach Hwy. 1 (at Laguna Chapala, 30 miles south of Cataviņa). Passable in 2WD, but trailers or sports cars NOT recommended.

Many many motels and hotels in San Felipe, rooms at Puertecitos, motel at Alfonsina's, Gonzaga Bay, and rooms at El Sacrificio, Gonzaga Bay. Good idea to plan on emergency-camping, just in case, depending where you are headed!
