ever heard the term BLEVE? (Sounds like Chevy) Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion.

You don't want to be in the same zip code when a BLEVE happens......

In our training "BLEVE" essentially meant:

Basically Levels Everything Very Effectively". Apropos.

One - 100 gal. household propane tank had a ONE MILE RADIUS of evacuation, if memory serves, which these days doesn't necessarily. We had a station saying from Monty Python...... "RUN AWAAAAYYYYYY !!!!!" Of course, we didn't, but no casualties.

Any old fart firefighters relate? Your first 'Christmas Tree' orientation drills? Take turns on the nozzle? Take turns # 2 for the valve? Sphincter factor....... you tell me. Fun to train, for sure. Real-live on RV's, trailers, factor increases.

Can anyone remember the BLEVE that caused the original movement of propane plants away from major towns? I believe it was Loreto, mass destruction, but a few years before my first southern ventures.

Bad times for s'more jokes.

I don't have a BUCKET LIST, but I do have a F***- IT LIST a mile long!

Some photos of a palapa fire at Coyote Bay a few years back. Arson was 'suspected'.

Was a little busy holding the firehose and fighting the fires...plus keeping my downwind home from burning due to falling embers. No palapa roofs for me, but most anything will burn with enough heat.

Last pic shows a propane tank 'bleve'. There were many. I remember a few rather loud whooshing noises, but no explosions.

I recall one propane bleve concerning a motorhome tank explosion that burned the arms of Pepe at Casa Yee in Mulege. It was quite some time ago..in the late 70's I believe. From then on, all motorhomes, etc serviced by Casa Yee were done outside of town in open spaces. I did just that many times with my Minnie Winnie and other RVs. Don't remember any bleve explosions in Loreto, but it may have happened.

Propane popping

The explosion and fire in Loreto did cause the propane depot to be moved to a pig farm over by Miramar. They had been sharing a large lot near where the Walmart is now with a tortilla maker at the time. Probably not the safest of arrangements.
