The road from LA to Loreto is paved, and it's pretty good pavement. 1,000s of cars drive it every week. You don't need a truck.
Most makes are driven in mexico, so can insure/repair most any car in Mex (lux brands like saab, bmw and ferari may be hard to find parts)

Yeah, but where's the fun in that? Let the girl get her truck. She needs a truck, and a cowboy hat wouldn't hurt either. She's going to need something to talk about when she gets old, and this adventure can add to her tales.

I say buy a 4x4 Toyota, tell a mechanic that you're taking it to Baja, research some the past threads here on Baja Nomad so that you are prepared - let some of the air out of the tires for sand, use a shovel to get unstuck, bring water, parts, tools, jack, spare tire/tires, first aid kit, etc., and have some fun.

Forget the truck. Get the Porsche boxster (new, because parts are hard to find).

But don't get crazy and drive off into the distant dunes! I've see it happen.

I did try to call on the toyota, John is busy...but in the meantime...there are actually a lot of trucks for sale in my price range...my biggest fear is breaking down (in between San Felipe and Loreto) and some nice man saying "Lo siento, senorita, no puedo arregular su carro hoy." I thought that toyotas were notorious for being stolen too for their parts...remember, dos ninas, with nadda none zero zippo zilch knowledge of automotive repairs.

Between San Felipe and Loreto? Maybe you should discuss your intended route as well. It sounds fun though. I'd bring camping equipment in that case, and I don't want to hear any of this "hotels only" business either. But I'd say that that stretch is the safest stretch for two girls - it's too rough of a road for troublemakers and opportunists.

Have lived in BCS for 11 years. Still have my 1991 Toyota 4X4 Xtra cab. Purchased it new at Toyota Carlsbad, 208,562 miles. Purrs like a kitten. The wife has a 2002 Toyota 4Runner 4X4. I guess we are a Toyota family!

For safety's sake, I am contemplating bringing my dog. I tried to attach a picture - but this is all so new and confusing...and dog safety in Baja will be another question, I'm sure...so, toyota, dog, beer, cowboy hat, and a better map...que buena!

I have a 1991 Ford. It's OK. I'm thinking of a 6-cylinder Toyota Tacoma though.

Oh, I really like that truck, Don, but I agree, 6 cylinder seems important. You are living full time in Loreto or just lucky enough to be there lately? Yo gusto mucho Loreto! Wish I was having lunch at Isla's now....

Be Smart.....Find a 1995 or 1996 Ford F 150 exteded cab with an automatic transmission and a small 302 v8 Fuel Injected motor. It will get 18 to 24 mpg. and have lots of room for your stuff and dog. Plus a very comfrotable ride.Try to find one with less than 100k on it. There are lots around. You can find one easy for $5000., or so.Get a lockable canopy too. Best most reliable truck ever built. You wont be sorry!!! Good luck and have a great trip.++C++:biggrin::biggrin:

Crusoe, you know, I was thinking that although the Toyotas by far have a better reputation, I have been driven around in Fords for the last several years and they are comfortable, and seem to be very reliable, and for my limited dollars I know I can find a better deal on a ford than a toyota (lower mileage, etc.)...I have to say, me likes the way you think...

...and my doggie is a cutie...if a bandito comes around, she'll even make a bark. Then invite him in for a marquarita.

My Ford has a small 8 cylinder engine, 4wd, automatic. It has air conditioning that does not work, and two gas tanks, with a malfunctioning valve between them. The brakes work, kinda. The windshield is...interesting. I took the camper off a while back.

Its handling on the highway is, imo, dangerous.:o

I bought it about 4 years ago for about $5500; it only had 70,000 miles then and one owner. It's worth about $1200 now.

I could get by with a slightly smaller truck, one that's easier on the highway driving.

The truck lives in Loreto full time, I'm here most of the time.

Don ....

Sounds like you're getting your moneys worth out of that truck. How many miles on it now? About 73000?

...good one, Dennis, but all seriousness aside, Don, that's a good point...are you happy with the truck for that price or are you trying to tell me not to go with a Ford?
