I think class 8 is really sad. Once the premier truck class with Walker Evans, Robby Gordon and Larry Ragland with overall wins. Many great racers did good in that class. I think there would have been many more OA wins if they had started in front of the buggies. The two races that I remember most was RG's OA win in 1989 and Brian Stewart's class win, 1990 maybe, he blew a tranny at Ojos and was down 2-3 hours. I remember Dave Westim (sp) GMC truck broke on the summit. I went past on a bike, I was running way behind thanks to a one eyed co-rider but that's another story. Then later in Matomi wash I passed him again. I think Dave was blowing power steering pumps.

Well, when I was more involved... Score had a 50% payback per class for the winners... ie. If 10 racers were in a class and the entry fee was $500 per racer ($5,000) then 50% ($2,500) was paid back to the top 1,2, or 3 finishers (depending on how many were entered).

If a class had too few entries, then classes were combined so there would be some money to pay back.

Most of the winnings came from the manufactorers in the form of contingency awards... ie. If you won using Brand X, then there was an awrd from Brand X... usually $1,000 or more. That's why you see lots of stickers on race cars... to show what products you are using for publicity photos and the money if you do good!

I know things change... just wondering how the payback works when there is only one of a few entries in a class?

Gone are Class 2 (2 seat unlimited), Class 4 (long wheelbase 4WD), Class 6 (Production 2WD water cooled passenger cars).

Class 8 specs are pretty liberal now. More or less a TT with a pair of frame rails going along for the ride. So a guys asks, "whats the point".

The LM class 8 is just that. See RaceDezert.com and do a search for Mark Newhan to see build up photos.

Mark really pushed the limits as to what would clear tech, but then when he and Paul saw how many entries they had to run through in the open wheel classes they entered it in TT. Pauls illness caused a withdraw for the 1000.

Now that Mark has delivered the prototype assault vehicle to the military, he said the race effort is back on to finish the truck.

Many of us think that SCORE should rearrange the class start positions so that the now allowed high horsepower truck classes don't have to run through so many of the lower horsepower buggies.

Some say the open wheel entries are way faster in the rough and tight stuff, which is granted, but the big hp rigs are much faster on the open parts of the course. And there are a hand full to be passed by 40+, rather than the other way around. I think this would re-energize class 8, protruck, 3 etc.

I couldn't resist...this is TW taking care of Baja Water Tank inspection.LOL

"If I am looking at the map correctly you will be riding bike #305X from Nuevo Jcn. to Borrego Wash.... AND bike #254X from Borrego Wash to Valle Trinidad and hopefully remount it for the final run from Ojos Negros to the finish line!!"

Looks bad for this plan, as 305X is way back at Mile 22, but 254X is already at Mile 115!
