If need be we can always make a run to Big Bend National Park--which David, you should do sometime if you're out this far--Chihuahuan Desert with some familiar Sonoran elements mixed in (Ocotillo, Creososte...). The mountains are granitic mixed with old limestone and volcanic so quite an interesting place too...

Texas is a BIG state!!!

Here is one of our photos from Texas, last year (Guadalupe Mountain) just south of Carlsbad Caverns:

I made some edits and believe I am nearly finished with Parts 1, 2 & 3... Part 4 I may just leave here on Nomad with a link to it from the web page...

You can start at Part 1 and there are links to the other parts from it: http://vivabaja.com/bajamissions

The goal with this revised web page is to have accurate facts about the 27 missions and many of the visitas in Baja. There just is way too much mis-information being published on the sites (including the brand new 2008 book/ folding map 'The Camino Real and the Missions of the Baja California Peninsula' with so many mistakes) has inspired me to do this.

Eventually, these new web pages will replace the mission pages now on VivaBaja.com

Thank you Nomads for your input and photo contributions to the new site!

(The link to Part 1 is also in my signature area, below each of my posts on Nomad)

Thw waypoint for the first location of the DESCANSO mission (identified in Meigs' photo as "FORT") 1817-1830 has been added to the GPS list, above.

With new discoveries made in July, 2009, I have edited this page with the addition of Santo Tomas site #2 and the Boca de Magdalena ruins. Satellite images have also been updated.

There is room for more discovery... Some mystery about the location or number of sites for the southernmost missions still exists!

For example:

The first mission south of La Paz was originally to be established on the coast near Los Barriles around 1721 as 'Ensenada de las Palmas'. Exact location unknown. Things didn't work out!

In 1722, the mission was re-established inland at 'Santa Ana'. That too failed after a roof collapse killed many during a hurricane.

In 1724 at a third location to the south, the mission succeeded for some years and was renamed 'Santiago'.
