Great video anyone thinking of driving in should watch!
Good film coming down the Widowmaker... You have some nice big tires on that Cherokee!
The bog was dry for you... imaging driving thorugh there with the road underwater!
The raven on top of the mission was cool!
Part 2... I will watch this afternoon. Thanks again!

Yea, I wanted to show the road in a video because there weren't any that I could find.
We walked to the bog before driving down the widowmaker to see if it had water. I know it gets pretty nasty when wet.

Well, that really does a good job showing how steep 'The Widowmaker' is!
Thanks for the video!
I will never get tired of returning to the last mission site founded by the Jesuits... an oasis in the desert. The palms and water are as beautiful as
the road is difficult to drive.

Me too, that's my favorite place in Baja. It has a special energy that I don't feel anywhere else.
The first time we were there it was very windy, when we got to the mission we could hear "deep voices chanting" something like monks hummmmmmmm; of
course it was the wind in the canyon but it was so funny and freaky at the same time
Can't wait to be there for the 5th time...

WHAT ABOUT A NOMAD TRIP TO THE MISSION, i will guess alot people are intimidated by the road, so going in a group will be more convinient...

Bajacat, David K. et al;
Should you knowledgeable travellers decide to make this trip and consider more Nomads for company, would you please post it?
I would certainly like to consider it, and I have another amigo who would like to go along too. We have an old 93 Jeep G. C. V-8, 4 WD, nothing
special in suspension, but BFG all terrain tires. Have we got a shot? Just rebuilt the engine and keep "everything" in very good condition. Have done
the San Fransiquito El Arco run and many others like El Marmol down "dead mans gultch" to the springs there. (forgot the real name.) This looks a like
it's a lot more difficult and I don't want to get stuck and be a burdon to anyone else.
Thanks,
fred & jim

Hi Fred,
Yes... more difficult than the road down to EL VOLCAN (the springs 4 miles from El Marmol)! However, that is a good test to start with...
The only problem a Grand Cherokee may have is some under body damgage as we drive over some large rocks and ground clearance and short wheel base rigs
are the way to go. A locking rear differential or some other traction control would be wise to climb back up the Widowmaker grade (seen in the photos
above and the video).
I got one dent in the running board area below the door (I don't have running boards, but that is the area) from a large rock that that Roy's Land
Rover pushed out I didn't avoid.
It is a 2.5 to 3 hour trip to go the 15 miles (including photo stops)... Extremely beautiful country... the best of Baja!
I have seen CJs, Wranglers, XJ Cherokees in there... The larger SUVs and full size pickups usually stop at the top of the Widowmaker (close to 2 miles
from the mission) and walk or hitch hike with their friends, on in.
Last time, we camped at the oasis a mile past the mission and that is down an even steeper grade than then Widowmaker, but not rocky. That is where
Baja Angel alerted us to the pack of Bighorn sheep walking the cliff right above our camp! http://vivabaja.com/msm

Hi David;
Thanks for the detailed version of why I should maybe reconsider this trip. Maybe I can upgrade my "rig" somewhat before you all take off.
The walking part of it, isn't in the cards for me anymore, just can't handle it, so I might just "play it safe" on that account alone.
It sounds like a wonderful trip, and I would sure like to be part of it, but not at high risk.

Hi again Fred,
It is a very rough road with large rocks and steep (low range 4WD) grades... While I do not want to discourage anyone from going to the mission...
they must have the vehicle that can do it with little to no damage. I have been there three times: 1999 on a quad, 2003 in my '01 Tacoma, 2007 in my
'05 Tacoma. All three trips are on my web site for you to see the photos.
Both my Tacomas were stock, no extra lift... Just the TRD off road package (locking rear differential, 16" tires, Bilstein shocks). I have 9.5" of
ground clearance (min.) and that should be close to what you want to have going in. In 2003, a Jeep Wrangler and a Toyota pickup (Fishunter's) came in
with me and in 2007 a Land Rover LR-3 (The squarecircle's) joined us. Nobody had a problem.
Baja Angel is a long time Jeep CJ-5 owner from the Tahoe area and she said of all the roads in Baja she has been on, this one was the closest to the
Rubicon trail for difficulty... The terrain was similar being over granite boulders. Instead of pines there are boojums!

Sorry Jose... but it will be another time for us... we already have Shell Island planned for Labor Day... as we love the water when it is still
bathtub warm!
Cataviņa/ Santa Maria would be VERY HOT on Labor Day... not fun with no sea breeze, or sea to jump into.
We want to go back to Santa Maria, but better if later this year... Christmas is a 3 day weekend this year and New Years is too... ??? Otherwise, if
Baja Angel arranges days off far enough in advance, another weekend... Call me to discuss this further.

We'll be down for Labor Day as well David, arriving Friday late afternoon. We always include a drive out to Shell Beach each trip so we'll come see
you.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Very nice... at low tide, I guess? It will be a full moon, and at high tide you would discover why I call it Shell ISLAND instead of Shell Beach

Actually after some discussion, we may just arrive by jet ski, so here's the deal, because it will be hot, we will want to stay soaking in the warm
water but hey man, could you bring us two beers when you come down the beach to soak with us? Promise I'll repay when you stop by our casa sometime!
