The violent deportees are a crime problem in the border region but are certainly nothing new. They don't have papers to work legally in Mexico- so take to other options. Their biggest crime tools are speaking decent English and knowing most Americans down here are good willed and compassionate by nature and that makes them vulnerable to criminals who honed their art in prison.

It's still 100% safer here than last year and the year before that. The challenge is how to get tourist to believe it is actually safe enough to return without censoring any bad news that comes out of Rosarito. A certain level of crime in normal or either side of the border. Many downtown businesses are closed here now and jobs are few. The locals are hurting and the boarded up clubs in the tourists zone add to the visual blight. Blight and tourism don't mix.

The "All Clear" siren won't sound until business owners feel it is safe to return to Rosarito... Like Mr. Iggy- who led the local mega-club marketing efforts. When he another others like him come back- people will know it is safe and profitable to re-open their doors. Then the tourist will start to trickle back in.

No blood, no foul. Any country that downplays kidnappings to "a temporary loss of freedom for the purpose of robbery" isn't going to take a carjacking seriously, and they don't. But we all knew that was the case before we moved down here right?

No. Actually, I didn't. I brought with me the North American mindset that laws are to be obeyed and broken laws will be punished. I refuse to give up that frame of thought just because I live in Mexico.

You will be eaten alive with that mindset. IMHO you need to check many of your values and safe driving skill-set at the border. I came down here with your "Mayberry Baja" attitude six years ago. After two kidnap attempts, one extortion attempt, a truck theft, and two physical assaults (one by a man in a truck who tried to run me and my dogs over with his truck on the beach while yelling " FU Gringos- go home"). I prevailed in all- but who wants to go through this BS all the time when we came to enjoy the Baja we loved 30 years ago. No place is the same as our fond memories of youth recall them to be- on either side of the border. Plan wisely.

Our approach now is to only trust and socialize with fellow property owners. We are friendly with, but socially away from , the transient rental grifter crowd this close to the border. Baja Sur is very different. You can learn from my experiences or learn on your own. In 50 years of living stateside I never once had anything bad like the incident above happen to me. Plan carefully.

The Mexican justice system is in its infancy. Courts and the criminal justice system you would recognize in the USA are still a few years away here... but they are coming. Not many lawyers are trained yet for presenting verbal arguments in front of a court. Right now it is all in writing and is decided in absence of spectators. Until the coming reforms happen it's all in who you know- not what you did or had done to you.

I'm sure what reality is here in Rosarito right now.

Now there are reports of TWO separate carjacking incidents in Rosarito and crazy Maggie says she has verified some of the story with the police:

"Rosarito Beach Police Department, and I guess you could say we got lucky. We spoke with Officer Jorge Caro, who turns out was the first responding officer on the scene at the Las Mananitas Restaurant incident. In fact, he was the officer who wrote the initial report. He verified everything, this did happen. He was also aware of the Rene's incident."

So , if these are true- there was one carjacking of a new SUV from an American at Rene's Mailroom and a second carjacking of an older model truck at Las Mananitas restaurant in town while the people were taking a noon Spanish lesson... (why would a restaurant allow Spanish lessons during the lunch rush?)

Anyone know what's going on?

Apparently there is a public meeting scheduled at the Rosarito Beach Hotel on Thursday afternoon with the Mayor and head of the police regarding this/these incident/s.

Let me save you the trip and half hour of time:
Gringos are not being targeted, these are random crimes of opportunity. The Rosarito Beach Police are doing everything they can to ensure Rosarito Beach is safe. The Mayor will say "Hey, even my truck was broken into in San Diego at an upscale mall last month.":rolleyes:

Must agree, or have been just lucky over the past four months down here.. have never felt like we got even close to someone trying to "do a number" on us..

We do carry those stun guns, and collapsible batons and travel with two dogs just in case

Not sure at my age and physical condition I would be all to effective with either, but.. I might get lucky, as long as I didn't come to a gun fight with the above items :):)

I do need to drop by Home Depot to pick up some of that long-range wasp spray many people keep in their cars for defense. I keep the stun guns at home- not sure what the legality is. I take a big dog with me everywhere I go, but last year three choc labs were stolen from a truck parked at the grocery store- so I don't leave them alone for too long. Once scent of food and they will stop barking and lick the perps to death.

Had a solider pull mine out and look at it, keep it in the door pouch on my drive side when driving .. he signaled his commander.. he came over handled it, sparked up, and said ... very good!! and handed it back to the solider and walked away, I said Vaya con Dioss and away I went..

I think they might look at the stun gun as a defensive weapon, or at least that was the way they looked at "me" having one.. they didn't even ask me to get out of the car, just open the trunk...

Perhaps the next time it will be different.. :):)

A Baja self defense and evasive driving class would be worth the time. Our home plan is: TASER, duct tape, roll them into doggie pool and hope they don't figure out it's only 4 feet deep. If they come with a gun it's: TASER, shoot them with their own gun, roll back into street. I don't have a car plan but don't care about damaging the car in getting away. Don't know if I'd have time to use bug spray. Won't carry a machete in the car. Would probably hit the panic button on the key chain to get attention.

While I'm on this subject - one of the easiest and best security tips I've seen is keeping your car keys with you at all times so you can push the panic button and sound the cars alarm- even if it's parked in the garage.

It's been my experience that car alarms down here are largely ignored, especially by car owners.

Excuse me but is that your car alarm?

Yeah, it keeps going off.

Well, would you do something about it?

Why? It'll stop in a few minutes.

You're probably right but at least people look in the direction of the sound before ignoring it.

From what I have seen on TV- encasing bodies in cement doesn't work well. Isn't Gotti under Yankee stadium or something like that?

OMG What would Duane "The Dog" Chapman do in a case like this?
Oh the Humanity!!!!

Join the Rosarito Footprinters and Harry O will place an invisable force field around you that will keep you safe while in Rosarito.
And for the low low price of $49.95 he will throw in a nifty tin star (gold in color) that will allow you to drunk drive through the streets of Rosarito without being harrassed by those pesky do gooder Rosarito Police Officer's.

What a snakepit. This isn't even cartel stuff. It's just garbage people doing what they know they can get away with because nobody is allowed to defend themselves. Defending yourself is against the law. Volunteering to live in this atmosphere should be against the law as well.

When someone stole my truck in Rosarito Beach with my Nextel phone in it a couple years back, I called my phone and told them I could cut off the engine by cell phone because it was an electric hybrid. I gave them fifteen minutes to bring it back or I would call the police and stall the truck where it was. It came back and I didn't have to deal with the police. They never bothered me again.
