I think those toilets are popular because people prefer them to a 'western' toilet. Squatting forces the upper legs up against the abdomen, pressuring it to naturally start the whole process. Pooping from a squatting position is really more satisfying (although 'mistakes' are more common).

1990 I was in a high-end department store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It looked just like Nordstoms inside with designer clothes, cosmetics. I'm in a dress, heels, pantyhose. I go into the ladies lounge and in the stall is a tiled pit along with a faucet, bucket w/ladle.:?::?:

I went to the KFC across the street.

Some things you don't want a closer look at...

The wife and I were in Amsterdam BM (before marriage), confined to our budget hotel room with a bad case of the Van Goghs and goes again. Imagine our surprise to find the "shelf style" toilet in the W.C. down the hall. :P

Thanks KASHEYDOG, but it's my own fault for posting a picture of a square toilet. What was I thinking?? :)

I mean here I am 64 years old, traveled all over the world and I never saw a square crapper, till today. Geeze, thanks Ken. You're my hero of the day .....
