Looking for an update on this question - dentist recommendations and pricing in La Paz. My sister badly needs dental work and I'm hoping to talk her into getting it done in Mexico. And swing a vacation out of it while we're at it :)

Not Mulege for dental work.

Yes, the Rotary Club sponsors a clinic and there are two private dental offices in town, but Mulege is not a dental-work destination in Mexico.

Come visit Mulege for the village charm.

In La Paz, or anywhere, which dentist one goes to depends on the work needed.

Nothing against American Dental Association ... but, IF one needs dental work ... drive down to Baja and have a vacation for a weekend at the best place of your choice and eat and dine to your content on the beach, if one so choses ...

You in most cases one will still come back with enough left over to have dinner when ya get back, plus another trip down ... including your transportation costs .. .assuming your driving a reliable vehicle and don't do something ... ahhh ________ :big grin:

Had a filling done in Primo Tapia .. walked in off the street ... no English spoken ... just pointed to it ... she did the rest ... still OK and I've checked out ok at the Doc's for the past few years ... 25 USD

Know that is a simple example ... but, in a lot of cases .. in ain't rocket science ... And my father in law was a dentist .. RIP

The wife .. isn't as easy going as me ...:lol:

Kgryfon - my husband is in the middle of dealing with some dental things right now. He went to Dra. Yxchel for an initial visit based on recommendations from this board and from other friends. She sent him to Dr. Eduardo Talamantes Jr. for a root canal, which apparently is a procedure that she doesn't do. Talamantes gets an "excellent" rating from my husband who was very impressed with this dentist. Cost for the root canal was $3000 pesos.

Now he goes back to Yxchel for a crown - cost for that is $3,800 pesos.

Hope that helps.

I have been very happy with the dental work I have had done over the last three
years. I have been a patient of Dra. Patricia Camon Sanchez.
Her specialty is cosmetic and orthodontic work, and of course, routine care. Her English is very good, and standards of care are excellent! She also has small hands, a quality I have never considered in a dentist before, but appreciated very much!
For the two extractions and implants that I needed, she called in an associate who was not fluent in English, but the procedures took place in her office, and she was present at all times to translate.
I did not track the final costs of the work I had done very closely, but it was quite a bit less than what I saw in Bajalinda's post.
Her office is on the west side of La Paz, on Calle Estrella del Mar, near what I believe are court buildings.
I will edit this post with her E-mail and cell number after I contact her for permission first, but the two listed numbers for her office are; 12-4-22-24, and 12-2-71-99. I have never used those numbers, so no guarantee of an English speaking reception.
Feel free to send me a U2U message if you need more info right away.

Thank you all for the recommendations! I'll pass on the info and see if I can convince her. We were supposed to go out tonight for New Years but she has a tooth ache. Common complaint of hers, and she just broke a tooth off as well. Not sure if it's the same one. I think her teeth are in really bad shape.

Kgryfon, If your sister already has an abscess, don't mess around with it! She will probably need to be on antibiotics for a week or so before the tooth can safely be extracted. Traveling with a tooth ache is not only miserable, it can be dangerous.
In her condition, the extraction and implant would probably be a three week process, with a return visit to install a crown when the jawbone and gums have healed and adapted to the implant.
That wasn't a deal breaker for me, because I am retired, love to travel in Baja, and saved more than enough to cover the vacation cost.
If your sister is not as flexible with her plans, she would probably be better off closer to the border. I understand that Algodonnes is more competitive with their prices, and is a heck of a lot closer for follow up work.
I hesitate to say what the cost for the implant was because I had other old work replaced, and spread it over two trips. My entire trip, gas, food, campgrounds and dental work was about $3200. I don't think I could get an implant in the US for that much.

Don't mess around with it

Kgryfon, I think I should add a bit more to my warning. In late 2005, I was working on a missile defense project on Shemya Island, 1200 miles south west of Anchorage AK.
The work schedule there was eight weeks on, and two weeks R&R in Anchorage. One of the staff had been enduring a tooth ache for some time, and had made an appointment to see a dentist on his next R&R. Unfortunately, the Aleutian weather got severe, below minimums for that air strip, and it was days with nothing but a first aid clinic waiting for a medivac to get in. The abscess went into his blood stream and he died on the flight to Anchorage.
I am not saying this is common, but it is possible. At least there is medical care available in Mexico, but you have to ask yourself, 'Where would you want to be if things get bad?'
Don't wait too long!

AKgringo - thanks for that other reference. Always good to have another option. How long ago did you have your procedures done?

I also have a family member in the States who has been asking about dental prices. Yxchel quoted $23,000.00 pesos for an implant, so with the exchange rate what it is these days, that makes it around $1,600.00 US dollars more or less. (That's only for the implant, no extraction since it's already been done.) Yxchel also calls in an associate to do the procedure in her office.

Yxchel's $3,800.00 pesos for a crown makes it come out at around $265.00 US dollars more or less. If Dra. Patricia Camon Sanchez can do better than that, I'm listening.

Thanks - I guess she's on antibiotics now for the toothache and getting this one treated, but she has ongoing problems as well. I suggested she go to a dental school and have them tell her what all she needs to have done so she has a better idea of what she's looking forward to. Maybe she'll just need to have an extraction now and get a denture later. I'm sure she can't afford implants for all the teeth she has problems with.

Bajalinda, I did not keep close track of what portion of the bill was for the implant in previous visits, because I was having other repairs to old work done as well. It probably wasn't a great deal different than yours dentist charged.
I did go back and check the charges to my Visa card for my last visit, a month and a half ago. I was charged $731 for a crown on the implant installed previously, replacement of a broken crown, two minor fillings and repairs to a thirty year old gold bridge. That also included an exam, X-rays, and some cleaning.

Thanks very much AKgringo. I agree, it sounds like there isn't too much difference between the 2 dentists.
