IMO when bringing stuff south. Do it on Sunday when the banks are closed. The MX border guys do not want the hassle so most times you get a green light. They want a easy day. Sunday going to secondary is rare.
Tecate: I always go east via the toll road You can save a bit by using the free section to the top of the mtn. Speed is good and city traffic is absent. Besudes the road is a great experience. Except for Ensenada route you will find construction on Mex 5 just S of La Ventana. Slow dirt detours are present now days.
Farther east crossings using I8 is sure a pleasure, but I would never use the west Mexicali crossing. Way to much city traffic and stop lights, besides on that route that is where all the corrupt cops are. Its a big city deal.
So Mexicali east is easy lots adequate lanes with frequent green light. But if you drive that far Why not cross at Algodones? easiest crossing going south that I have used. Still get the freeway to nearly the border. I always use Algodones when towing the Bronco south even when coming from San Diego.
Going north its a totally different story.
BTW, Did you know that tools are supposed to be exempt. Good luck convincing the border guy that no duty is required.

And from Gonzaga to L Chapala the road is same as always. Crappy dirt with imbedded rocks. More traffic these days as well.
(Pavement ends just N of Gonzaga).

Tecate has been easier lately than San Ysidro for getting stuff down without a hassel. If I get the green light in Tecate I just keep going but if I get checked then I will pay the duty and grin and bear it. What is the crossing like in Calexico, are they pretty lax like Tecate or do they check all trucks like San Ysidro? From there I am going to take the road through San Filipe and on down to Laguna Chapala and on to BoLA. I haven't done that route in probably 30 years but been hearing so much about it lately that I thought I would check it out. I'm not in a rush.

Dazzled

If the Ensenada route (either one posted here) gets you dazzled, you probably should not be driving in (the) Baja
