I think this is a little different than driving recklessly.

Makes you think twice about Violence in BCS

i have to go on my personal experiences and that of people I have talked to in person. Driving on the roads is by far the most hazardous thing in Baja.

What, anything North of El Rosario and South of Lopez Mateos has to to with the Baja I care about, I'm not sure. The rest is all plastic bags and dust.

If I understand you correctly, that is too bad.

I have complained that it is getting harder to spell adventure with capitol letters, maybe that's changing.
How many people will change their behavior because of a Gov. warring? I just do what I do, "lay low ans sip slow".

85 US citizens murdered so far in 2014 in all of Mexico!! WOW!

The Chicago SunTImes says that more than 500 US citizens have been murdered so far in that fair city in 2014.

So, where would you rather be??

Baja or Chicago....

Gee, tough choice, such a dangerous place to be....

And, now I know that driving over 100KPH on the Carreterra (that is a spectacular 62 MPH for those without ready conversion kits) is striking terror into the hearts of many.

Interesting times, for sure....

I don't vacation in Chicago...but if I did I guess I could quote the murder rate in Iraq.

I do not want to be #86 either. I think I will be aware.

Well said. The comparisons are rather meaningless.

There are parts of the mainland Mexico where we have traveled in the past, but just won't travel right now, and other places where we will still travel. When we head back down Baja this spring, will avoid Guerrero Negro and drive right on through Vizcaino. There are only a few gas stations in Guerrero Negro and we found it very disturbing that a couple of people were blown away in one of them. We found it disturbing enough when the restaurant owner was killed in his restaurant where we used to like to eat, but this was even more disturbing. It is not like one can avoid being in the "wrong" part of town. And when one of the cartels starts hanging warning signs on the fences of the schools in Vizcaino, well it is time to drive on through.

I agree that there is no nexus between Chi and Baja.
However, it does put the issue in clear perspective.

My real question....
How many US citizens murdered in Mexico were killed by another US citizen, even more specifically someone that they knew...
I am doubtful that all of these murders were committed by locals.

And, another interesting stat would be how many US citizens murdered in the two states of BC and BCS.
By Mexicans....

bet that total is in single digits, likely close to zero.

(still wondering how frightening it might be to see someone drive 100kph on the Carreterra)

And how many of those US citizens were involved in criminal activity either in Mexico or the US (or both). We seldom hear of the "back story" to any of these deaths.

Baja sur approxamate population of 600,000.. Chicago population near 3,000000. I know that corruption in both places runs rampant, but in Chicago the police arent going to kidnap and kill ya...

Tourist Travel in Chicago

Not MY kind of town, BUT...............Looking at a map depicting the pattern of homicides in Chicago and the breakdown by race with 70 percent of victims [mostly younger] Blacks, it's pretty clear that most tourists coming to town wouldn't be likely victims unless they were touring certain neighborhoods for illicit purposes.

Curious as to which restaurant owner you are referring to.

That said, a number of years ago, a local, who we had become to know, said that virtually all the Pemex stations in GN are gaming the pumps, and he suggested that f we can drive that far, we should get gas in Vizcaino.
