Ensenada - Circle K across from the Army base

San Quintin - Los Pinos, south of town

El Rosario - Leave a donation with Antonio for the ambulance service

If you fill at the Los Pinos in South San Quintin, you really do not have to stop in El Rosario 45 miles later.

We always make it to Guerrero Negro on a full tank from Los Pinos.

Ahhh biut you can always donate on-line through Paypal!

Thank You. We have, in the past stayed at Baja Cactus, and found it to be cold and dark, as well as noisy because of all the truck traffic. Sure, the fixtures are first class, but we'd rather stay at Jardines on our way down.

Supporting the Desert Hawks does not mean you have to stay at a depressing motel.

Nice try, but it's not like Antonio spends much time in El Rosario.

I think I've seen him there twice over many years.

Hey, Howard.....maybe you should stop by more often. He has always been there when I stop in February and/or March. And I don't see where anybody recommended staying at the Baja Cactus......maybe it was cold and depressing for you because of your presence

Too bad you only donate when you can give it personally to Antonio. I don't need that kind of gratification to know I have done well and he is not always available.

Antonio lives most of the time in El Rosario, not Tijuana as before. This has been for a few years now. He has plenty to keep occupied, so don't expect him to ever be sitting behind a desk. Why you don't see him when you get gas or a room. However, he is accessible and the front desk can contact him if he can help you.

You are entitled to your opinion. But, in my experience, El Rosario has been the least welcoming town along Mex 1, and I've made the trip to Cabo and back, as well as whale trips to SI and GN for decades. Perhaps, I will make an exception for Ed at Baja's Best. Great guy.

We just did the drive with two dogs in our Subaru Outback towing a small trailer. Stopped to give the dogs potty breaks but didn't venture off the main route...

We crossed the border about 8am on a Monday after filling the gas and getting breakfast. We were the only ones in immigration getting tourist visas. It was very easy - there are two banks there and a few ATMs if you want to get pesos though I would recommend going to a bank location at one of the stops along the way for a better rate.

We stopped at El Rosario the first day. Stayed at Baja Cactus Hotel - on the left after the Pemex (also on the left) and ate at Mama Espositos which is two doors down. The driving was OK but pretty crowded around Ensenada. After the first day we only saw a few dozen cars each day and was way more relaxing. We got in around 4pm, stopping a few times to let the dogs walk around and get some snacks from OXXO.

We left around 9am after filling up at Pemex. (Never had any worries about gas- getting around 20 MPG - filled up at each major stop and never got below 1/4 tank) Stopped for the night in San Ignacio because we didn't want to drive the devils grade after driving so much. We could have made it further but San Ignacio is super cute with springs so it's lush. Little town square and nice church. We stayed at Hotel La Huerta - past the town square and right next to the big market. We checked the prices at Desert Inn but it was twice as much. We walked into town and ate at Victor's for dinner. There was a little breakfast place on the oposite corner where we had a nice breakfast. Again, stopped at Pemex before heading out.

The road 2-3kM before the Devil's Grade is being worked on so you are diverted to a pretty bumpy dirt road. The drive down is well paved and we didn't feel nervous at all after practicing downshifting with the trailer. I wouldn't ride the brakes the whole time. After you get out of Santa Rosalia, about an hour, there are some amazing camp sites along the sea - we stopped at one and let the dogs romp in the water. It could have cost 100 pesos to park but there was no one at the gate and I think that may be for people who are there all day. I would recommend a picnic if you have time. It's the first time after the Ensenada area when you're at the beach.

We drove to Cuidad Constitucion as we have stayed in Loreto before for vacation. CC is not a touristy place - mostly farm workers - but there are several Pemex, restaurants and banks. If you're looking for a nice town square definitely stop in Loreto or drive down to La Paz if you have time. We stayed at the Oasis and ate at a place with a palapa- both only OK. Oasis was noisy with two guard dogs next door barking all night.

After filling up at Pemex and getting some pan dolce we drove through to La Paz but didn't stop because we have vacationed there before too. If you haven't I recommend staying there and going to the malecon and Bandera Bay - both awesome.

We got to CSL about 2pm and stayed at Los Patios in the corridor until we found our rental.
Buen viaje!

Thanks for all the detailed information. I feel pretty confident now making this drive now with the family. Plenty of options now and solid inside information. Will post a follow up report once we're back.

Mama's is a historical treasure but these days, only a mediocre restaurant IMHO.

Perhaps... Udo sure likes the crab soup there!

We have always been lucky at Mama's or maybe not as fussy when we are enjoying that Baja Feeling, south of the border?

We eat more often at Ed's (Baja's Best Restaurant) or Hugo's (Tacos Mision) than Mama Espinoza's.

It has been a while since we over-nighted in El Rosario... 2011, however.

So, keep the reports coming in, as Hwy. 5 has been our corridor if going south of Cataviņa to avoid the cities and farm traffic between Tijuana and San Quintin Valley. Sadly, we miss staying at Antonio's awesome motel, Baja Cactus... and talk about making El Rosario a destination again, like we did often in 2005-2010. So much to see and do around El Rosario!

When Ed is there, it is a great place to eat. The historical problem was that Ed used to travel up to the central coast to see his mother, because if he didn't, she would drive down to El Rosario, which he did not like, simply because of her advancing years.

Do you know if ed's mom is still around?

Great recommendations, guys! Now can you make rv stay recommendations for same trip? I will be headed from San Felipe back up to HWY 3 to head down. Not wanting to hurry at all, will probably stop 2-3 days at most stops. Travelling with 2 Chihuahuas and fishing poles, as well as a great supply of Pacifico. All who say howdy, Cata will be welcome to join me in a beer. Probably leaving SF after Thanksgiving.

Good RV stop for the night is Rancho Santa Ynez, about a km or 2 south of the hotel in Catavina. East of the highway about 1/2 km. The turnoff is marked. Flat open space with ancient mezquite trees. Good, safe place to rest for the night. 100 pesos. The ranch owners will come by around sunset to collect.

I was there this past May. Everything was fine.
