Note that for your northbound return, Google Maps directions in Calexico west takes you to SENTRI lanes (at least as of a couple months ago). Gotta be aware and ready to diverge off to the west and loop around before you go too far (or if you have SENTRI, just hammer down) :)

I have to say I quite enjoyed that drive from Tecate toward Mexicali on 2/2D (I was on the toll road). Did it on my motorcycle and it was great fun. Depends on if the OP is interested in the most direct/fastest way - or the relax and enjoy it way.
