Shaking off the Polvo
I was trying to recall what the heck I was doing in this photo and it occurred to me- this was the Polvo trip.
In El Ni?o years when the esteros were full and flowed in to the ocean, we couldn?t get very far when we drove down the beach. To get to Punta Santa
Domingo (the bluffs in the background) from Punta Peque?a (San Juanico), you had to take the inland road.
On this excursion we learned about the 3 mile stretch of babypowder-fine moondust on the mesa at Santo Domingo before you get back to the coast. In
our very exposed buggy, we drove completely immersed in a polvo cloud for about an hour and a half on this 95? day. Had to drive slow because we
couldn?t see past the front of the buggy and we took a few wrong turns which added to the trip.
We laughed at first, but think I was trying not to cry towards the end (but we won?t mention that part). I don?t know how you racing guys in open
vehicles can handle this stuff for hours on end because, as I recall, it suc?
was extremely uncomfortable.
Neat place once we got there.

That red buggy looks almost as clean as if it just came from a car wash
