David, it really is a matter of opinion. Not everyone loves El Rosario---I find it OK, but it is not one of my favorite places---why would you say it was only his attitude?? No, his opinion.

For many, many years we have used the Pemex in El Rosario --long before there was a Baja Nomads, and still do, but try to use the bathrooms elsewhere. For years, they were the best----not any more.

Baja Cactus---still a nice place, except as of a few weeks ago, the last time we were there, they were refilling their complimentary lotion and shampoo bottles---something I find offensive---don't offer them. We never use them, but picked up the lotion bottle, the top fell off as it was overfilled, so we looked at the shampoo bottle---seal broken.

Also, they are not up front about the lack of internet---happened last two time. Lady says yes there is internet, but later when I inquired why I could hook up to the network, but there was no internet, she said, oh no, the internet is not working here---you need to go next door. No internet, no problem, just say so when asked about it upon checking in.

Now, I U2Ued Antonio about these things---no response which was disappointing.

There are places in El Rosario where we like to eat and think that Baja Bed and Breakfast is one of the WORST. But others like it.

Again, it is a matter of opinion----you really like El Rosario, great, but not everyone does. We love Bahia Asuncion, and have had people there who could not wait to leave.

Promote the places YOU like and use, but please allow others to have their opinions and to express them.
Diane

Wow... this is hard to believe you would make up such a story Diane... why?

The little comp. shampoo bottles hold just enough for one or maybe two uses... there is no room to refill, let alone time expense... they are sealed bottles... as well. Are you saying that his trained staff goes through the waste basket and pulls out empty or used shampoo bottles? Man, this is something out of CNN or MSNBC! Would you use a personal care product in a motel from a broken seal bottle, anyway?

There is full time staff to keep the Pemex station bathroom clean... if they fail Antonio wants us to tell him, as he lives 220 miles away and can't be there everyday.

Baja's Best is totally remodeled and the food has always been good... if you don't like the relaxed 'Baja style' atmosphere there... then I suggest Cabo.

There is no comparison to Asuncion... apples and oranges. Asuncion has one retaurant with two items on their menu (meat or fish)... it was good, but one place compared with a dozen in Rosario? That was 2 years ago, maybe the menu has grown or there is another place?

I would drive out there for Shari's sashimi/ sushi anyday!

There is good and not so good everywhere... I just don't think you need to make a place sound gross like you just did.

As for u2u unanswered... Have you seen Antonio post here lately? Try his email instead... or call him (leave a message at the motel's phone).

David, if you choose to believe that I made this story up about what we found at Baja Cactus the last time we were there, then go for it-----I guess now if someone disagrees with you, they are a liar?

Also, try a course in reading comprehension, it might help. As I said, some people like Baja Bed and Breakfast, some don't----but I guess that is also a lie? We happen to be among the ones who do not like it! But, since you think it is good, well, I guess that is the final word.

Another reading comprehension problem. I was not comparing El Rosario to Bahia Asuncion---just making a point, but I guess it went over your head. Some like some places, some don't---simple, David, simple----

I wouldn't get personal David, but I may be a lot of things, but a liar is not among them---and that is a very personal insult.

I even thought about answering the U2U you sent me in a open friendly manner-----but it would be a total waste of time.

Diane

Yah Diane... I am thinking we are just talking at each other here... as you may wish, why bother? I apologize if you story is true... but it is just so fantastic and I assure you Antonio would NEVER approve of such a thing. I emailed him your comments... Since the killings of two family members in 2006, we don't see Antonio on here very often.. Mexico is a dangerous place and one needs to be careful there... well anywhere for that matter.

The u2u was perhaps to help explain why I have no respect for government run programs anymore... personal experience. Why their attempt to destroy the best health care in the world is something that must be prevented... our lives depend on it.

Back off??? when someone accuses one of being a liar?? Yea, right.

It would be possible if others would just respect the opinions of others and refrain from calling them liars when they disagree.

Yes, we have rescued nomads and other baja travelers, and would cover the backs of most---but there are some, I would drive right by and not look back.

David, your last response---well, YOU are not worth it. So, of course to cover your tracks, you go political----easy to do when you are covering your own inadequate tracks.

OK, Woody, I am done with this topic----think I will go make up another story.:lol:

OK, here's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Although I didn't say anything in my earlier post about our stranding, there were a few "issues" with our stay at Baja Cactus.

Other than one older woman who manned the desk occassionally, there was no-one that spoke English working there. The desk girls, one in particular were not only unhelpfull but insulting and rude at times.
It took 3 days to get a call through to Antonio and his suggestions were of no help at all. He offered much but knew nothing and could not get his empoyees to help us.

In contrast, when we told Mama's daughter of our plight (brain freeze on her name), she offered to loan us her car and got us phone numbers of tow trucks and stopped charging us for internet use - she was just plain NICE.

At Baja Cactus, the cleaning help was very pleasant but well-trained ? No.
Why would they insist on wrapping the face towels in the shoe shine cloth ?
No water 3 of 8 days of our stay.
No internet (as advertised) for our entire stay.
No hot water numerous times.

I will say that the pillows were wonderful and the place was generally pretty clean.
Is Baja Cactus a king of lodging ? No IMO.
Do other motels refill their used mini soap bottle ? No, it is considered unsanitary.
Do I trust Diane's observations ? You bet-cha !
Will I stay there again ? Not likely.
Will others stay there ? Sure but even DK rarely stays there anymore !!

BTW, thanks again to those who REALLY helped us when we were stranded;
Diane and John - who came all the way from SD to get my wife, kids and dogs.
FDT !!!!! Who arranged purchase and shipping for all my parts and found the tow truck.
Bajagringo ! Who delivered parts traveling over 100 miles out of his way.
TW !! Who was the friendly face that towed us off the road and checked on us all again.
Roberto !!!! Who towed my trailer to the campground and then my truck to the dealer.

And to those that truly offered;
Pompano
Natalie Ann
TioMiguel and Shari

(DK was at the hotel while we were but did not look us up. :P )

BTW, I don't understand why the young lady has not responded to my kind offer to join her on her travels. Anyone else have any idea why she's not up for it ?? Or was she just a troll - in my mind ??:lol::lol:

As I write this... and Elizabeth just read too... we are both shaking our heads that there would be ANY bit of truth to this tall tale...

They come only in sealed bottles... use once and throw away.

Since you chose to make such a big deal about it DK, I remember that none of our shampoo bottles had seals at Baja Cactus. The little bottle are, in fact refillable as I have seen my 8 year old do this at home. Yes, refilling a used bottle, taken from the trash (dirty tissue and the like) would be gross !

Although I may or may not view this as a problem, the fact is that Diane is very honest and observant and I implicitly trust that her comments are true; I know the lady.
The fact that you, DK, accuse her of lieing is ridiculous and just your style.
Shampoo away DK !!

Antonio checks in daily.. multiple times... We get him on the phone within 5 minutes of arriving to say hi if he isn't there. How is it you couldn't ask to talk to him? The Internet is WiFi and there is a PC in the lobby in the desk... did you ask?

We stay there every time, unless full or no water... and the water issue is the town's, not the motel's.

You whiners are something...

Bye!

And I thank you for the lovely childish name calling.
Now you are accusing me of lying also ?

The comment about you not looking us up was just for effect; gotcha !
I would not have wanted you to look us up anyway.
Being stranded was better ! :P

The staff could not or refused to contact Antonio.
The wifi and any other connection was not operating for the entire week - per the desk staff !
We tried and no, we are NOT novices at this.
And Baja Cactus has it's own water tank; they just don't monitor it enogh to know when it's going dry !
Oh, and by the way, the heat and AC didn't work in our romm or any others when we were there.
I told my story and I'm sticking to it. :P

If you don't like it, too bad.
It's all the truth; for others to take or leave as they wish.

To Refill or not to Refill...?

Hello my friends,

First of all, let me thank DavidK, for letting me know about the comments being posted on this thread about BajaCactus... these kind of observations are very important for me... David is right, living so far from El Rosario makes it very difficult to keep track of every little detail in the daily operations of either the Gas Station and the Motel... I make my best effort, but perhaps it is not enough.

Now, getting to business... refilling the bottles of amenities... nnnnoooo... of course not... I do not know about the politics of other motels, but definitely we HAVE NOT never, ever, authorized this kind of activities at BajaCactus. Each and everyone of the bottles of shampoo, cream and everything else is place brand new, out of the box, every time a room is clean and prepared for the next guest... this is how we have it established, both economically and in the logistics of our inventories.

Diane, I do not know what you saw at our Motel, but it was definitely not a "refill operation" from our part. Every bottle left in the rooms after the guests leaves, is recollected and sent back to our Tijuana office... and only if those are not left in the trash... why?... our US supplier takes them back for recycling, and gives us a small credit on new orders. Every shipment comes in new, sealed boxes, as well as the bottles themselves... and then taken directly to BajaCactus.

Regarding the Internet... you are right Diane... my apologies to you and every nomad that has contacted me about this issue... I must admit this problem was a mistake on my part... I made the wrong choice about the equipment that distributes the LAN/WiFi signal... it did not worked continuously and crashed a lot... and to make things worst, in general, the human resource in El Rosario has a very low level of education, my staff comes from that pool, therefore, it is quite difficult for them to grasp the basics of networking, so, whenever someone approached them for assistance regarding this issue, their answer is/was "it does not work, go next door"... even though it was working, so they get rid of the "problem" quickly.

Three weeks ago, I finally replaced the equipment, and since then, it has been working flawlessly... about my staff, I am working on it... slowly, but I am working on it.

About the Gas Station restrooms... I agree... they are old and not much can be done with them, other than a complete renovation... We still have a full time employee hired only to attend the restrooms, but even though they are clean, they do not look as sharp as they should... We already have approved plans and blueprints by Pemex to build new ones (it took them 2 years to approved those plans), but now we do not have the economical resources to build them.

I have been working on remodeling the actual ones... I believe we will be able to accomplish this within the next few months.

Diane, I am sorry for not answering your U2U, but for several months now, when I have time to browse this board, I do so not logged in, therefore I do not see the U2U's... but I will answer yours as soon as I finish typing this words... anyway, you can all always find me at my personal email info*at*bajacactus.com

Now... Diver... I am deeply sorry for your bad experience in Baja, and specially if you felt unattended while staying at BajaCactus throughout your crisis... I was personally in Guadalajara the whole week this happened, and the couple of times I spoke with you over the phone, I did so from there... the only way I could personally helped you back then, was for me to fly back to Tijuana and drive to El Rosario... therefore I had to rely on my staff, and sometimes that is difficult, specially if they do not speak English.

And speaking of languages... we have to remember that when you travel to Mexico, and Baja is a part of it, you are in a foreign country, and you could not expect the locals to speak your language... when I go to the States, I do not expect everyone to speak Spanish... I respectfully address everyone in English, if they happen to speak my language, excellent, if not I understand they have no obligation to do so.

Now... specifically in El Rosario... English spoken personal is really quite difficult to come by... we do have Carmen (the old lady, who happens to be 45 years, and works six days out of seven, from 4:00pm to 12:00pm)... and we recently hired a new guy, who also is very fluent in English, working from 7:00am to 3:00pm (not in the front desk though, but he is around)... we always try to hire anyone in town who speaks English, but they are really scarce.

You spoke about "the rude"... at the time, she had her little sister very ill with cancer, and she was, in a big part, economically responsible for her, that had her very stressed out, you did told me over the phone about her, buy I did not find it in my heart to fire her at that time... my personal apologies if she mistreated you... unfortunately, sometimes, life throw us these kind of problems, and we have to deal with them, it could happen to anyone...I know this is not an excuse, but as humans, we must learn "to be humans"... we have to understand that even though we might have problems, sometimes, our fellow humans are also suffering... we are not robots... nevertheless, she does not work with us anymore.

Trained staff... everyone of the ladies who work at BajaCactus are housewives... they do not live in a big city with specialized schools in lodging or tourism... we are not even a ten story, five star Hotel... we are, almost literally, in the middle of nowhere... the only way to properly train them, is to bring them all to either Ensenada or Tijuana... or hire an specialist from the city to go there... quite costly... I am just happy if they do a nice cleaning job... nevertheless... I will take your comment under advice, and try to bring them some more knowledge into how to properly fold the towels and placement of the amenities... it could enhance the looks of the room.

Water... we do have a 80,000 lts storage capacity, which, with the Gas Station and the Motel fully operational, lasts us around three days... and we do monitor them daily... however, again, we are in a small rural town, let us not forget this... there are no water utilities here... we rely, as everyone in town does, from a local well, run by the community... they do not have the huge resources of the government, so, whenever something goes wrong with that water pumping/distribution system... that is it... there is nothing to be done but wait for the people to get organized and fix it... which could take one day or a few weeks.

Even so, when this has happened, we always try to hire a local water truck (if they are available), who usually sell 3,000 lts for 50 Dlls... just make the math and you will know how much it will cost us to have a 20,000+ lts daily supply... when we need these services, we only buy enough for the motel... and only for the night.

A/C in the rooms... also, I agree... we have had this problem for quite a while now... again, our location makes it quite difficult to try and bring top of the class services for our guests... either the help is not available or is quite expensive. I also have received several comments from fellow nomads about this.

On this issue... it just so happens, that yesterday (Sept. 10), I closed a deal with a company from Ensenada, and they promised me to be in El Rosario next Wednesday (Sept. 16th) to finally fixed all my A/C's units.

As you all can see... we are not blind to your comments... on the contrary, we... I, take them very seriously, for me, they are a very important feedback, that allows me to correct the way... it may take me a while... but I try to fix all the problems that, throughout your observations, I become aware of.

I hope I have not offended anyone with my remarks... however, I believe that we all must understand that El Rosario is not San Diego or any other major city from the first world... I really wish I could offer all you top of the class, first grade Vegas Style Resort services... but we are not in Vegas... we are in El Rosario... we have to work with what we have at hand... the only thing we can promise, is to do our best effort to try and have the nicest place, out of what our location has to offer.

El Rosario is a very tiny, small town, forgotten in the mists of time, located in a very particular location in Baja, which makes it very difficult to keep up... is it impossible?... no... I say no... I say it is just interesting!!!

A big hug to all of you my friends!!!
